Sturgeon’s Law

Ninety percent of everything is crap.

Derived from a quote by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, who once said, “Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That’s because 90% of everything is crud.” Oddly, when Sturgeon’s Law is cited, the final word is almost invariably changed to ‘crap’.

I received a reply from the SCDNR guy this morning:

The regulation is more up-to-date than you can find. Typically, there is a delay from the time of approval to the point the internet regulations are updated.

I do appreciate your interest in the heritage preserve program, and I encourage you to consider use of SCDNR properties through other allowed activities such as hiking or birding. Below is a link to all of the HPs found in SC.

Then a minute later:

I forgot…can you send me the lat/longs for Henderson & Savannah HPs.

He seems kind of anxious to get the lat & long of those caches…In his original email he mentions Regulation 123–203 (T) and at first I though maybe the T was a revision level, but after reading the regs posted on the SC Gov Site I’m thinking the T represents a new section of the code as the current one ends at S. I’m having a hard time believing that geocaching would warrant its own section, but hey what do I know. So I asked him for a copy:

Wow, more up to date than September 26, 2008. Is there anyway I can get a copy of the updated regs? There is a gathering of local geocachers this coming weekend and I would like to let them know about this change.

That was at quarter to 10 this morning. So far no response.

I think I’m going to contact the local cache reviewer and clue him in to my conversation, maybe he can even get a copy of the updated regulations.

Started down, went up, still up.

Brian, I appreciate you updating the rest of the cachers. I am more than happy to help you in any way possible. Remember, the point of these properties are to protect the natural resources…as I mentioned in my first email. It becomes difficult to protect both flora, fauna, and natural ecosystems when the general public does not adhere (get of trails, litter, etc) to the approved laws. I am not anxious about the lat/longs…I do not want to waste my time looking for them. Moreover, as I responded earlier we have begun burn & deer seasons (private), so I do not want anyone to get injured. The sooner the caches are removed the better. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me.

  • I see you have stumbled on my little corner of the Internet, welcome.

Some quick research on geocaching.com reveals that the SRB cache has been in place since 10/6/2003 and has logged over 120 visits. I emailed the owner before I contacted you hoping to get the name of who he talked to at SCDNR, but he was unable to give me a name, but mention he had worked with some one and had actually relocated his cache at the request of SCDNR from nearer the rocks to back closer to the trail loop.

The owner of the two Henderson caches never responded to my email. The Sandhills cache has been in place since 3/10/2007 and has a little over 50 visits. The Uthorent cache is the newest as it is in the newer section and has been there only since 3/22/2009 with just 13 visits. I can’t see where that much traffic would be a real big menace to the natural resources of these areas, but then again I’m not the expert here.

Check your email in the morning for the coords for the three caches. If I didn’t already have plans to head to NC for some hiking and geocaching this weekend I would volunteer to lead you right to them, as sometimes even with the lat/long they can still be hard to locate.
