If it is in the upper 80s and it is November, is it too late to refer to it as Indian Summer? Beautiful day. We spent a big chunk of it blasting hither and yon on Lake Thurman with friends from the Miata Club. To and from the lake were spent enjoying the beautiful day.
When I got home I peeked under the car to see if I could see where the leak is coming from. It doesn’t look like it is at either the fill or drain plug. Must be coming from the front seal. If that is the case, I may have to go back to plain ol’ oil. Tomorrow after work I’ll put the car on jack stands and clean it all off, then check again in a couple of days.

The garage smells of Simple Green. Tonight after work I put the car up on jackstands and squirted the stuff everywhere on the differential and transmission (and the bottom of the engine for good measure.) After about 10 minutes I sprayed it all off using a garden hose. During those 10 minutes I took the time to sweep out the dust, acorns, leaves and dead roaches from the garage. The bottom of the car is clean and now I will check it on the weekend and see where my leak(s) is coming from. I say it like that because I noticed that there were some oily drops on the floor near the middle of the car to go along with the ones at the rear.

This may be the rant I’ve had fluttering around inside my head for the last few days. I could have sworn I used it before, but a search of my site reveals nothing like it. I may have actually verbally ranted to someone and that is why it seems familiar.
I don’t need a TV to eat my meal. Really. I must be in the minority though, as it seems like every restaurant I have eaten in, in the last month has had multiple boob tubes hanging all around. Outback, Tony Roma’s and Krystal to name some chains. Vinny’s Pizzeria, Ferrando’s Italian Restaurant and Acropolis to name some local places. The only places I’ve been that didn’t have any were Burger King and Popeye’s. Can they be far behind?
I can’t prove it, but I think Donna feels threatened by Alexandra Steele. She is an On–Camera Meterologist at he Weather Channel and seems relatively new. I think she is on mostly weekends, but has occasionally showed up in the mornings. Whenever Alexandra Steele comes on Donna picks that time to change the channel. I know it might be coincidence, but my Man’s Intuition tells me otherwise.
While Alexandra is an attractive woman, Donna has nothing to fear from her. Now, Kristina Abernathy or Sharon Resultan, that’s a different story.
Tonight was the Master’s Miata Club meeting. It was unusually warm for a November evening and we had the top down and comfortable is just T-shirts. We were inside Vinny’s Pizzeria for about an hour and a half and when we came back out, condensation had formed all over the interior of the car. Fortunately I keep some paper towels in the trunk, so we could dry off the seats before plopping back down in them.
The Miata Club met at Vinny’s tonight. After last weeks visit to the place and seeing what room was promised and sampling the food I didn’t have high hopes. Well boy was I disappointed. They gave us a big long table in the corner instead of the room with the pool table. The pizza was excellent instead of just so-so. Please we had a large (for us) crowd in attendance. Too bad we didn’t have any real business to attend to…

Last night I looked in on the hot water heater that for reasons unknown had started to drip at drain outlet and just as mysteriously as it started, it stopped. Tonight, hoping that that same magic might have worked on my leaking differential, I didn’t pull into the garage, but got out and checked the floor. Still leaking. Maybe I’ll get some regular oil and start adding it a bit at a time until the leak stops.
Yeah, I know, don’t be so cheap, drain the $10 a quart synthetic and fill it back up with dino, already.

I haven’t ranted about Popeye’s for a while (almost 2 years) so either I have gotten used to the crappy service or I’ve stop going and just don’t remember. Today we went for lunch there and there were only two people in front of us. Didn’t think it would take too long, but boy was I wrong. Customer #1 finished up in a jiffy, but No.2 was a little old lady. She couldn’t hear to well and probably wished for a translator as the counter person spoke mostly blacklish. If I hadn’t lived in the south so long, I would probably also had trouble understanding her. After waiting on those two people, the counter person went over to help dish out food. Donna and I stood at the register for the next 5 minutes watching her fill orders for these people and the drive-up ones too. All the while she never looked back to even acknowledge us. Finally we just turned and left. I guess maybe she was waiting for a longer line to form so as to make it worth her while to come over there.
We went up the street a hundred yards to Burger King. tired of getting burgers that have been sitting in the rack too long, we have a plan. When we order we always tell them to hold the mayo, this ensures that we get a freshly made sandwich. It has worked pretty good up until today. The sandwich was freshly made, but it was made with a patty that had been sitting around, it was just barely hot enough. Not only that, along with holding the mayo they skimped on the catsup making for a very dry meal. The only thing that remotely saved our lunch was that we had to wait a bit and got fries right out of the bubbling hot oil — mmmm.
Today was the Miata Club’s Photo Scavenger Hunt. We only had 4 cars show up to play, the absolute minimum needed. Those who played had fun and listening to their stories over lunch was worth putting it on for us.
When we gave the teams their instruction sheets, Donna and I headed off to do the prize shopping. As is our usual practice we parked far out in the shopping center lot. This has two benefits, first we get a nice walk in and second there is less chance of door dings. Because it was cloudy with a chance of sprinkles we put on the cockpit cover. Boy did that turn out to be a good idea. We went into we went into 5 separate stores hunting just the right prizes. We wanted to get something nice, but not too expensive. Store number 6 was the winner, Michael’s had picture frames on half price sale. We snagged 8 nice wood picture frames for $30. Four 4x6 for second place and four 5x7 for first. When we got back to the car parked near the edge of the lot, we noticed that the sprinkler was on and was spraying all over the car. The cockpit cover had done its job as the interior of the car was dry, until I uncovered it in an attempt to put the top up. Donna didn’t want to get wet, so she refused to help. I managed to get the cover off without spilling too much of the pooled water into the interior. I timed it right and raised the top real fast. Unfortunately the spray was coming in the lowered passenger side window. It made two sweeps into my face as I fumbled to raise the power windows. It made two more passes before I got my key out of my pocket and turned the ignition to ON and could actually get the window up. I got the roll of paper towels out of the trunk and wiped up as good as I could. I spent the rest of the morning with wet jeans.
It is funny now that I look back on it and if anyone was watching I bet they got a good laugh. And now that I have had a while to look at the problem, I probably could have avoided getting wet at all by getting Donna to come up from behind the sprinkler head (it was only sweeping 180 degrees) and just hold it in one spot away from the car.

Let us tell today’s story by recapping all the posts this week so far by making some corrections and/or observations.
Friday, November 07, 2003 — Lunchtime Fun
At lunch today Bob Smith was the last person to get his salad delivered to the table. This led to him recounting a meal out with friends in the past where he never actually his meal. This led to, you guessed it, he didn’t get his hamburger today.
Thursday, November 06, 2003 — Hey That’s Wet
The interior of the car got soaked today. Read about it over on the Diaries and then come back.
Wednesday, November 05, 2003 — OCM Phobia
While watching the Weather Channel to get the forecast for today I realized that I was wrong about the name of the On–Camera Meterologist. It is Hillary Andrews not Alexandra Steele. Hillary is so new she doesn’t have a bio page over on their site yet, so I can’t link a picture. While watching Hillary do the forecast for the northeast Donna came in and changed the channel to a local station saying that their weather would be more accurate.
Tuesday, November 04, 2003 — Maybe I Need To Write This One First
True to form, I wrote the Diaries story first tonight and now I’m resorting to this cheap trick to generate a post.
Monday, November 03, 2003 — This May Be It
There was a TV in Salsa’s, our lunchtime restaurant, today. To be fair it was aimed at the bar and not the regular seating area.
I requested bagels for breakfast, so Donna requested I go get them. After I got home from Best Bagels & Deli, she said, “I forgot to tell you we are out of cream cheese.” Back out I went to Bi-Lo. Both trips I had the window down for only part of it as wintertime arrived today. fortunately it is only for today as by Monday it will be back in the 70s again. Good thing too, driving around in the cold with the top up I can hear the dash rattle in two different spots at two different RPMs.

On this morning’s errands I tired of constant classical music from my MP# player, so I ventured onto the radio dial. One of the local stations was having a continuous Christmas music weekend. There are almost 3 weeks until Thanksgiving already! It was only a matter of time I suppose, we are now used to seeing Christmas merchandise make limited appearances on store shelves along side the Halloween decorations. There is already a “holiday movie” playing at theaters near you, Elf.
Making matters worse is that today I compiled and burned a Christmas Music CD for a swap…
My 14th anniversary was last Friday. I didn’t buy any gifts, I didn’t even acknowledge it at all. I hope I can be forgiven.
On Tuesday, November 7th, 1989 I drove home in a Miata for the first time. 1990 Mariner Blue with the A Package, A/C and mats. Paid list price (around $15,500 total) when others were being charged premiums.
Kept that car for 6 years before trading it in on the 1995 Laguna Blue in December 1995. I guess that is why I got away with forgetting, Friday was my anniversary of being a Miata owner not the owner of this car.

This weekend I did not watch a DVD all the way through of the five attempted.
1) The first of the Sopranos, Season 4 discs was ejected after 2 of the 3 episodes it contained. Maybe it was the long layoff between seasons or maybe I finally figured out it was just a soap opera with cuss words, killing and an occasional naked breast. The rest of Season 4 discs were then removed from my Netflix queue.
2) The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers was turned off after 47 minutes. I consider this a major failure in my Science Fiction fanhood. I could never read past the first couple of chapters in the books. I tried several times in my youth to do it, but failed. I did manage to watch the first movie all the way through and figured now that I got all the characters down and was somewhat interested in them I would make it through the whole series. Nope.
3) The Emperor’s Club lasted 16 minutes, 17 seconds. I went into this with a bad attitude. I can’t stomach Kevin Kline, I’ve almost never liked him, A Fish Called Wanda was the exception. And I knew that it was going to be something like The Dead Poet’s Society going in, but I just couldn’t get into the story.
4) Read My Lips. This one was the third movie I attempted to watch Sunday afternoon and it stayed playing the shortest 5:25. Perhaps if I had given it more time…I cringed at what was happening to this poor woman in the beginning, but for what ever reason I didn’t really care. I didn’t find her likable, sorry. I started painting the kitchen cabinets instead.
5) I did eject The X-Files Season 1: Disc 4, but that was after watching Episode 1x14, Lazarus and this disc will go back in next Sunday to watch the 4th and last episode on it. Disc 5 is #2 in the queue and will be here shortly.
This is our extra hour a day week, so we can get Friday afternoon off. After work tonight we went to do a short workout at the health club, about 30 minutes of weights, and when we got home had spaghetti for supper. When we were done eating it was only 6 o’clock, but it was as dark as midnight outside. I can barely muster the energy to post and as you can see I can’t think of anything constructive to rant about…
I think I have a slight case of Seasonal Affective Disorder.
Our old towels had turned to sandpaper these last few months, so last night when we went to replace them I insisted we get some real soft ones. Donna had some nice ones in the cart when I joined them, but I thought we could spend a little more than the $10 each and get something more cushy. I jokingly said let’s spend double that oughta do it. Little did I suppose that they actually had $20 each bath towels. Well we picked up 2 a piece and that shot pretty close to a whole Ben Franklin. But man, they are soft as velour and suck up the water better than a Bounty paper towel.
The Miata is getting long in the tooth (I know some will feel it is just getting broken in at 124k) and this is the longest we’ve gone without owning a “New” car, so I’ve been contemplating replacing the Miata with one of the new Mini Coopers. They are about the same size in wheelbase and track, but the Mini is a foot shorter overall. Not a convertible obviously, but they are available with a big ol’ sunroof. Trouble is they are still a rare bird after two years in production. You can go to the MiniUSA site and build one to suit you, but then there is the couple three months wait (some say a lot longer.) We have scheduled a test drive next Saturday in Charleston, SC. I’ll let you know my impressions.
I wanted to go to Greenville, SC to test one but I had a bad experience trying to arrange a test drive over the internet. Maybe I’ll detail it tomorrow, because it is definitely rant-worthy, but I don’t want to do it tonight, I’ve got to go wash the old beast for a Miata event tomorrow…
Earlier in the week I signed up on the website for them to send me a Mini brochure. It arrived in the mail today. I am beginning to think these guys are too cute. The brochure was about the Mini, but it was also a mini brochure. It measured 3–1/2″ by 3–1/2″. When unfolded, its 10 panels measured over 3′ long.
I also have been checking out the Miata.net equivalent for the car, Mini2.com. They even have an active forum for sharing the love with other Mini nuts.
After a bit of reading in the forum it seems that the path to Mini ownership is fraught with obstacles. A lot of the same things transpired when the Miata came out in 1989. Things settled down for the Miata in a year or so, but the Mini has been for sale since February 2001 and the car is still not that readily available.
Not really. If you stood out of the wind in the sun during the mid afternoon you might believe it was a cool summer day.
It was a nice day for the “Membership Drive.” We actually did get a new member. A fellow who had purchased a new Miata from Rader back in the real summer, showed up to claim his free membership. He had to leave early, so he said, I hope we didn’t frighten him off.
It also became common knowledge among the group that I am flirting with leaving the Miata fold for Mini-dom. When I blamed it all on Mazda for not having a decent blue colored car, Scott hustled off and got the hot-off-the-presses 2004 Miata brochure. It contained this sharp looking picture of a bright blue Miata. Seems a new color for ’04 is Strato Mica Blue. I never trust the colors depicted in Mazda photos as they have been way far apart from the actual appearance in the past. Good thing, because it turns out Strato is the same color as one of 2003’s Special Edition colors which is much darker than the brochure (or web page) shows and when I saw one in Rader’s showroom several months ago it looked almost PURPLE!

Blew out a turn signal bulb yesterday. We were on our way to a Miata event at our sponsoring dealer, so when the first parts store I stopped in didn’t have what I needed I figured I could get it at their parts counter. The bulb is a pretty standard automotive bulb, an 1157NA. 1157 is the type, 12 volts, two filaments, one brighter than the other and the NA means it is amber. The parts store had plain 1157s, but because the Miatas turn signals are mounted in a clear lens I needed the yellow bulb.
When I asked the parts counter guy for two 1157NAs he didn’t move, he just looked at me like he was waiting for more information. None was needed, but he asked anyway, “What kind of car is it for?” I sighed internally and said out loud, a Mazda Miata. Off he went to the bulb draw. He rummaged around for a few minutes and came back with two bulbs. When he put them on the counter they were clear. I said, “I wanted NAs, I need them to be amber.” Back to the drawer he went. More rummaging, lots more. Finally after what seemed like 5 minutes he returns with two yellow bulbs. I checked the part number just to be sure. As I’m walking away I heard him say to himself, “I always wondered what NA meant.”
I guess basic automotive knowledge isn’t a prerequisite of working at a part department in a car dealership. To be somewhat fair, this dealership sells both Mercedes-Benz’s and Mazda’s so maybe he needed to know how much to charge me. I paid $2.87 for the pair, I wonder if a Benz owner would have had to fork over $8.59 for his?
Watched the 1969 version with Michael Caine tonight. For those of you who have seen a lot of 60’s movies, this thing would strike you as extremely odd. For those of us who have seen a bunch of movies (or possibly lived in) that time frame, this movie is still quite odd. I think it must be the strong British influence.
There can only be one reason for the remaking this flick — BMW. I know nothing has been said and maybe I am a bit of a conspiracy theorist, but they had to be behind it. The 2003 version is nothing more than a 111-minute commercial for the new MINI Cooper. Hey it worked I’ll be in Charleston this weekend driving one.
After a week and a half ago’s lunch fiasco we will no longer be visiting the only Popeye’s in town, nor will we ever set foot inside the northside Burger King again. There are just too many choices of places to eat that we need to subject ourselves to sub-standard service or food. Tonight we have to cross another place of the Bogardus Dining Out List. What is usually a nice place to get chicken fingers, disappointed us big time. First clue was when we were standing in line to order the counter person started mutter about having the answer the phone and taking those orders. The wait for our meal was way out of proportion to the busyness of the joint. The fingers were barely warm enough to eat, the cornbread was stale and the mashed potatoes were pretty cold. I guess they must have put the plate in the freezer while waiting on the green beans. The beans were piping hot. We didn’t eat the cornbread and I did take the mashed potatoes back up and asked if it wasn’t too much trouble, could I get some hot mashed potatoes. The poured a little more gravy on them and nuked ‘em. Unfortunately now they were as hot as the beans thereby making the warm chicken seem less so. So long Wife Saver, Zaxby’s here we come.
Ever since I drove that Sea Foam Green Miata about a month ago I’ve had the itch to get a new car. This one is the oldest and highest mileage car I’ve owned at 8 years and 124k miles. Ever since we have been married we have always had a nice automobile that we bought new. Although there is nothing really wrong with the Miata, I think I’d like the feeling of a new taught car.
The trouble is that in the past eight years Miatas have crept up into the middle 20’s and that just seems like too much money for, in essence, a small car. On the plus side, Mazda is offering 0% interest on 2003 models and they might be willing to deal some to clean the lot of these “old” cars. The bad news is that the Miata doesn’t come in, what I consider, a decent shade of blue.
On the other hand I am intrigued by the new Mini. A brand new Mini Cooper can be had for around $20k and a supercharged S for only three thousand more. On the plus side for them is they have two shades of blue that appear acceptable and they are a excellent handling car for a front-driver. The down side is they aren’t convertibles and from what I’ve read on the MINI2 forums the quality in certain areas is suspect.
I guess there is option #3 to consider, take an antibiotic to squash the fever. I may need heavy doses after Saturday, we are going to Charleston to test drive Minis.

We are in the middle of a kitchen spruce-up. Fresh paint on the cabinet doors and new shiny silver hinges and knobs to match. We have a yellow tile counter top which was standard in that era and the cabinets were painted a pale yellow to get everything to blend in. This time we have decided to embrace the fifties in some spirit by painting the bottom cabinet doors in what could only be called glossy avocado. The top ones will be painted in another 50’s inspired color, glossy mustard. Tonight we got the bottom portion finished, somewhat. Although the hinges were the same style as what was removed, when reusing the pre-existing holes a few of the doors don’t close nicely anymore. And with the extra coats of paint a few of the drawers don’t slide as well as they used to…
Brother agin brother! Father agin son! Families torn asunder in South Carolina! No, I’m not talking about the Civil War, but something almost as important to folks around here, USC plays Clemson in football tomorrow for statewide bragging rights for the next year.
The first winter after we moved to South Carolina I bought a new sweatshirt. I picked it up because it was a nice shade of maroon and had the words SOUTH CAROLINA in white block letters embroidered in an arc across the front. I didn’t realize until a couple years later that it symbolized the University of South Carolina because of its colors, etc.
Friday’s since September have been wear your school colors day at work. My college is Delgado Community College in New Orleans and they don’t sell school stuff online, so I was left out of the festivities. The only time I remotely played along is when I wore my red, white and blue rugby shirt and proudly proclaimed the USA was the school I supported. But today I broke out the maroon sweatshirt to wear to work just to see what would happen. Some good natured ribbing, but not much as I think most people already knew I really didn’t care one way or another. Secretly, deep down inside I am rooting for USC. For one how can anyone root for a school who’s prominent color is orange? And secondly, you gotta love a school that actually encourages people (even the girls) to shout, “Go Cocks!”
The day I’ve anticipated for 2 weeks came and went. After a chilly drive down (the 1st half with the top down, until we got too cold) I drove right by the dealership. The Mini place shares the building with the BMW folks and it is a new building that is attractively landscaped. Unfortunately the palmetto trees and other plants practically hide the place from the road unless you know it is there. I guess this is probably OK with them because it fits more in with what I think the BMW car dealer philosophy might be, if you want one of our cars, come find us. Not like your basic US/Japanese dealer where the cars are on spinning pedestals 6 inches from the road with flags and balloons flapping everywhere. Really, has there been marketing studies that found a direct correlation to balloons and car buying desire.
We turned into a different Hendrick dealer’s lot and tried to snake our way back as it looked all connected. It was not and we ended up way out back, close to the BMW service area. There were a couple of Minis back there that we looked at for a few minutes before going in the service counter and asking where the Mini dealership was located (it was still not apparent from where we were.) On the short walk over, I dragged Donna over to see a BMW Z8 that was in for service. Donna wanted to know what the big deal was and I said, “It’s like a hundred thousand dollar car.” She harrumphed and said, “It’s ugly.” In magazine photos I thought it looked real sharp, but in person I had to agree with her.
When we arrived the place was strewn with Minis of all variations and colors. We met out “Motoring Advisor” Dana and she set about lining up a couple of cars to drive. My only requests were to drive a base Cooper and an S, with one of them having a sunroof. First up was the base car with no sunroof. It had some dealer installed 16″ wheels instead of the standard 15s, too bad, I had hoped to try the base in stock form so I could gage ride/road feel and handling differences when I got in the S. Didn’t really matter as the MA rides with you and guides you on about a 10 mile loop. You get a half a mile of Interstate and then just city streets. There is one patch of a road with a couple of bends in it, but nothing to really gage the handling capabilities. Next was a drive in the supercharged Cooper S. The normal S tester and the one she wanted to take us in didn’t have a sunroof either. I reminded her that I wanted one with the sunroof, so off she went to find one that fit the bill. Found one but I think that she didn’t want to take us in it was that hadn’t really been fully prepped. It still had plastic on the seats and cardboard all over the inside. It didn’t matter to me because all I wanted out of this was to see if I felt the extra 50 horses were worth the $3K over the base. Out for the same 10 mile loop.
When we got back I had one more request, I wanted to see some cloth seats. The base had leather and the S had the leatherette. The fake stuff was a very nice quality, the feel and finish would fool a lot of people, but I think cloth would be better than the vinyl and leather at $1600 was too much for too little. And if I was buying a Mini I think the cloth would be the way I’d go. There was one she could show me, but Dana had to go back inside to get the key. After we stood around a bit idly chatting about colors, I thanked her for her time and asked for her card. I think we both knew that I wasn’t buying.
Here is why I’m not buying: Neither blue in person blow my skirt up, after that any color was a compromise and neither Donna or I could pick one we really liked. The inside was too plastic feeling, the door pulls felt really cheap, the dash when you touched it had the feel of the side of a Barbie pedal car. The rear view mirror on the inside reminded my of a child’s compact mirror. It was small and quirkily shaped and surrounded by a 1/2 wide plastic frame. On the first run we started out with the A/C on and the fan seemed really loud for the amount of air it was putting out. On the second run with the roof open and both windows down it was really noisy, even at city driving speeds. Almost as loud as the Miata with full top down and if you are going to have that much sound and fury, why not have the whole convertible experience. The sunroof from the inside didn’t seem as big as it does looking at it in the roof. I didn’t find the dead pedal until I was stationary back at the dealer looking at the cloth interior. I was not impressed, Donna on the other hand didn’t like it at all. A ten mile, 15 minute drive is not enough of an experience to really tell if you like the car, for that length of time a new Chevy Cavalier is probably a wonderful car. I guess if you were meant for the car that is all it would take, but having owned a Miata, I needed to be sold and wasn’t.
Here is some of the nice things. The base car, although 15 HP shy of my Miata and 200 lbs. heavier, felt just as peppy. Not being a big HP guy the S version wouldn’t have been worth it. Good thing too, as the hood scoop sort of ruined the cute front end we both thought. Damn thing is cute as a button. Plenty of leg room, I had the seat forward a couple of notches. The doors opened really wide. Did I mention it’s cute?
Donna said it best for both of us, the inside doesn’t live up to the fun promised by the outside.

My quest for new car ownership took a major blow today. The Mini Undewhelmed us. Not bad, but it was no Miata.
After 3 years of no car payments, when we do undertake them I would like them as small as possible. Ideally $300, with 325 really being the max I feel comfortable with. With a Mini that was a distinct possibility, with a new Miata it is a lot further out of reach. Then you have to take into consideration that insurance will now go up for your more expensive car, next year’s (and hereafter’s) tax bill goes up too.
There is zero percent financing on 2003 Miatas until next Monday, so for 60 months, $300 would be financing a total of $18,000. Even if the dealer was generous and gave me what KBB claims is a private party price of $4k, that only brings me to the 22 thousand mark. That is base Miata territory and if I’m buying I would want the upscale L package for the cruise and limited slip.
The other option open is there is a rebate on Miatas of $2750 until next Monday, 12/1. This is more appealing as in the price range we are in here and available interest rates now it is cheaper to take the money off up front.
The real problem with all of this is the same one that sent me Mini shopping to begin with, there is no real color Miata out there that really appeals to me. Most the ‘03s left over out there are that hideous Splash Green and the equally as repulsive Special Edition color of Strato Blue (which is more violet than blue.) It is almost enough to drive a man to buy a red car. Actually there a few Garnet Red (which is actually more maroonish) cars out there and Donna kinda likes it, but I can’t abide by the tan color interior I’ve seen them with and I’m not too sure they would look good with my interior color of choice, black.
There just may not be a new car in my future. Small sporty convertibles are few and far between. The Toyota MR2 is too quirky looking and has less storage space than the average women’s purse. Boxsters and SLKs are out of my league. I guess I could start looking at 2 year old Honda S2000s, they came in sort of an attractive blue with a blue interior.
I think if I can get a good deal on an ’03 I may just upgrade the Miata. There is a $2750 rebate offer or zero percent financing available until next Monday 12/1. I think I’d like a new car and have even decided to be a big boy about having to have a blue car and if I want a Miata it just ain’t going to be blue. I spent this afternoon taking some of the stuff off my car that I want to keep and returning it to as close to stock as I can. I put back the OEM switches for the barndoors and hazards. I pulled out the toggle switches in the console too. (I have to fabricate an aluminum plate at work tomorrow to cover the holes.) Even if this new car thing doesn’t work out it was time for a change anyway.

After test driving Minis yesterday we stopped in to a Mazda dealer just down the street. We parked off to one side and started to wander the lot. A salesman noticed us and asked if we needed help. We said, “No we are just browsing, but if you give me your card and we decide to buy, I’ll ask for you.” He saw that we had driven up in a Miata, so he said, while waving in one direction, we have a $2750 rebate on the ’03 Miatas and we are ready to deal. We have some pre-owned, pointing in a different direction, that are marked way down that we can also deal on. And if you want that one, we can really talk deal as we just can’t seem to sell it. You guessed it, he was pointing directly at a Splash Green Miata.
Went ahead and traded in the 8 year old Miata on a shiny new one tonight. We briefly considered offering on the Splash Green as it had started to grow on us during the 4 days we had it. We thought if it grew that well in 4 days after about a year we would love it to death. Then simultaneously we went, “Nah.” More than likely we would regret it after a month as it would not have grown any nicer, but probably would have back slid into repulsiveness.
That means we bought the maroon and tan one. Actually, its more formal name is Garnet Red Mica and Parchment, but who has time to type that all out? On Sunday we visited the Mazda dealer on the SC side of the river and he had a Garnet car with the black top and interior. It was OK, but not enough contrast maybe. (Remind me tomorrow, as I’ve got a good rant about this place.)
Right after that we went to the GA Mazda dealer where the one with the tan interior sat. On second look I realized it was a nicer combo than the maroon/black combo and actually a very nice looking car.
With this move there will probably be some changes. This site is hosted on the domain I use for the fan club for 1st generation Miatas, now that I own a second generation, I’ll be giving up the domain, if I can find a caretaker, in February when the rights and my hosting agreement expire. May move back to, shudder, Blogspot. Got a while yet before this become a pressing issue.
The numbers at the bottom of the page reflect the totals for a car I no longer own. If you are looking for a ’95 Laguna Blue Mazda Miata with 124k and in excellent condition, call or email Scott Rushton. (800–634-7038 / s.rushton@radernet.com)
A few thing are going to change around here because of this event. First I’m going to stop counting top cycles. I’m also going to stop with the running totals on money spent, maybe because it will jump $300 the beginning of the month for the next 60 and I don’t need the reminder. I think I will keep track of maintenance costs and at what mileage & when I do them (I’m getting old and it will be nice to have the reference.) I will also keep track of the modifications I make to the car and what I spend on them (these will be few and far between because of that $300 thing mentioned earlier.)
Oh, yeah, the colors will shift here too. I bought an ’03 Garnet Red LS with the Parchment Leather interior (read, maroon and tan.)

Have a Norman Rockwell-esque Thanksgiving.
The car has been ours for exactly 24 hours now and I’ve already started the personalization process. Actually that started before I even turned the key. On Sunday I returned the blue car to as stock a form as possible, but I didn’t have my original shift knob, so I had to leave the Voodoo Magnum on for the drive over. After the price was agreed on and the finance guy was looking for a cheaper than we had 4.09% interest rate, I removed the stock knob from the new car and put it on the trade-in. Then the Voodoo went on the new car.
When we got home I put the matching e-brake handle and the black leather brake boot on. Next I swapped out the 1 piece sun visors for the folding ones of a early 90s Miata. They are slightly faded compared to the brand new ones, but they don’t cover the top latches, so they eliminate two steps in the top dropping process.
Next was the removal of the government mandated baby seat tie down points and the seat stop bracket which kept you from impaling your kidneys on the tie downs. This gave the navigator an extra 2 inches of rearward seat travel.
While technically not a mod, I removed the front license plate mount and with it the plate that said Rader.
When Donna went to get in the car this morning she said, “Hey, what’s this.” I went over and looked and there are about 8–10 little scratches on the top of the door. Looks like someone’s dog either rode around in the passenger seat with its paws resting on the door top or it spent a few minutes licking the face of a passenger. We do not own a dog and when we drove the car home last night we pulled it straight into the garage. They must have been there from an earlier test drive. When we looked at it Sunday on their lot when we decided to buy, it was covered in dust, etc from being outside. The car was washed but who ever did the job didn’t notice or didn’t want to say anything. When the salesman or whoever (maybe even the person who washed it) parked it under the awning for delivery didn’t see them because they are on the passenger side.
When I called the salesman he was very apologetic and said bring it back and we’ll make it right, no matter what it takes. He did say wait until Monday though, with the Thanksgiving holiday they won’t be able to get to it until at least then.
Had there only been a couple or maybe if they were in any other spot besides the top of a door where it is really noticeable, I’d have said nothing. I mean the car is going to get a scratch or two or worse eventually, why not just be done with it.
