Northwest Transit Band

Was It Ladies Night?

Saturday, August 29, 2026 Leave a Comment

Tere and I always make an early arrival at Celebrities. We want to eat some food, get a couple social lubricants in us, and get to chat a bit before the band starts up. By the time the Northwest Transit Band got to playing, the place was starting to fill up. But I was one of maybe three males in attendance, and there were about twenty single women.

Tere and I are just friends, and we both feel that is just the place for our relationship, so I can kid her about this being a target-rich environment for me, and maybe she should move to a table by herself. There were 6 ladies right in front of us; I think if I did really know how to dance, I might have asked any one of them onto the dance floor.

By the time we left, about 3/4 of the way through the second set, the male/female ratio was a lot closer to 50/50, and the dance floor was really full. Next time they are in town in late September, I’ll be in Utah with the Everyday Driver guys for their 4-day adventure trip.

Friday Night Is All Right
(for dancing)

Friday, July 31, 2026

This is the third time I’ve been out dancing at the bar that is practically across the street. The Northwest Transit Band has a definite yacht rock vibe and is fun for those of us of a certain age that recognize the songs and that are perfectly suited for shaking around in a haphazard way. It seems like they play at Celebrities about once a month, which is just the right gap for a night on the town and a bit of what some people might call dancing.

This time it was back to just Tere and me; last month’s extra two didn’t join us. Apparently, she and I connected to the music, and the other two did not. Tere’s beau, Jason, asked if it was alright if he didn’t go (of course it was OK), and Donna didn’t go because once was enough for her.

Tere and I have adopted the stance of, “We’ll never see these people ever again,” so we just cut loose. This isn’t exactly correct, as I think I’m starting to recognize a few of the people, but I still don’t care (this comes with the wisdom of age.) The band will back on the 29th of August and we’ll be there.

Oh No! It Happened Again

Friday, June 26, 2026

That’s right, I danced again to our favorite band, Northwest Transit Band, in our favorite walkable club, Celebrities. This time things were different. That is besides the fact it only took 1.75 beers to get me on the dance floor. Instead of just me and Tere on a faux date, it was a double faux date. Tere has an actual boyfriend.

Okay, quick sidebar. What is the proper term for “boyfriend” at our ages? “Manfriend” sounds like a name for a butler. One of the ladies at the Koffee Klatch called him her significant other, but they’ve been dating for a month; I think they would have to be dating longer for the “significant” label. Anyways…

Tere wrangled another female friend of hers (from Quail Hollow) that I also know. As a matter of fact, she was on the trip to Lebanon with us back in May. I don’t know if it was intentional so that I wouldn’t feel like a third wheel, but that wouldn’t have happened because apparently Jason wasn’t a dancer. Tere and I did dance to about three or four songs. Then again it could have been intentional, because the fourth of our group was not a dancer either, so she and Janson could chat while Tere and I were making fools of ourselves on the dance floor.

Another sidebar. The female friend’s name is Donna, and that would be perfect; if we happened to take a liking to each other, I couldn’t screw up by calling her the wrong name in the throws of passion. But that wasn’t going to happen; she is nice enough, but there just wasn’t any chemistry there.

On Tere’s and my second dance, we kind of paired up a bit with a second couple, and they ended up moving to our table. So it became a triple faux date because they were brother and sister-in-law. After three drinks Tere and Jason wanted to bail. I had just acquired a 4th beer, so I said, “I’m going to stay and finish this.” At that point they left, and Donna went with them (see no chemistry), so I danced with the 3rd woman for a song, and then the band took a break. I finished off the beer, and we three hit the exit. They to their car, and I hit the bricks for the 1/4 mile walk home.

Oh, and four beers is one too many. As they did the first time, the waitress grabs everyone’s charge card to start running a tab, and I’ll give you three guesses as to who of the group forgot to get their card before leaving. If your first guess was me, you don’t need those other guesses.

Saturday Night Fever

Northwest Transit Band

My next-door neighbor and I have been trying to arrange an evening out via postcard for several weeks, tonight was the night. There is a place called Celebrities Parkway Grill less than a 1/4 mile away. Neither one of us had been in there, but it was chosen so that we could walk over and home in case any alcohol was consumed.

This is really a glorified bar more than a “grill,” and on Saturday nights they have live music. Tonight’s band du jour was the Northwest Transit Band. We arrived at around 7:00pm, and they were just setting up. We ordered food; she had the Crispy Chicken Salad, and I had the Crispy Chicken Sandwich. I ordered a beer, and she had a vodka lemonade. The food was consumed, and about then the band started up. We ordered a second round and listened to covers of songs we mostly knew. The first thought was after drink number two, when the band took their first break, we would duck out. When the waitress came by and looked at us, we couldn’t exactly hear what she said, so we nodded. Next thing we knew, there was a third drink delivered to the table.

I said that I wasn’t much for dancing, but apparently 2.5 beers is just enough, and with her enthusiasm, the next thing I knew, we were on the dance floor with tens of other people, swishing around and making vague dance-like movements. We danced a couple more songs with a break between and finished off those drinks. About that time the band took its second break, and we settled up and walked home.

She seemed to have a good time, and I did as well; maybe we can make it a monthly-ish thing. I’m off to write another postcard…

sturgeon’s law

"Ninety Percent Of Everything Is Crap"
Derived from a quote by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, who once said, "Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That's because 90% of everything is crud." Oddly, when Sturgeon's Law is cited, the final word is almost invariably changed to 'crap'.
