Month: March 2026
Is It Saturday Already
We’ve actually had several days of nice weather. Not real warm, but I did get the top down on Buckie for a bit yesterday. Settled into a routine: cereal with banana for breakfast, working on a jigsaw puzzle for a bit, a caramel latte from Stomping Grounds to take on a walk, and a sandwich with apple slices for lunch. Then park on the couch for the rest of the day—baseball, college hoops, and random movies or TV shows. Try not to be jealous of my exciting life. 🙂
I Thought About It
I’m a sci-fi guy, and all this talk and the media blitz for Project Hail Mary made me actually think about going to see the movie. In the end I gave up the idea for two reasons: it is 2-1/2 hours long and my bladder isn’t that big, plus watching at home will have no one talking or looking at their phone. So maybe I’ll watch another movie based on an Andy Weir book, The Martian. I have a copy of it so I can hit pause if I need to go to the bathroom or want to look at my phone.
This triggered a memory of me blogging about how much I like that movie. I should add it to my list of when I’ll rewatch a movie or a TV show or episode on a certain day each year, i.e., Jesus Christ Superstar on Good Friday or Elf at Christmastime. The post is from 2 years ago, and through some fuzzy Googling, I determined that I should be watching it on a Tuesday in March. Well, today is Tuesday, March 24th. Guess what movie I’ll be viewing tonight?
Eight for Friday
What a slug. I grocery shopped, worked a little on a jigsaw puzzle, and then watched an FRS spring training game. I had soup for lunch and started looking for something to watch. And like a couple weeks ago’s finding of Yellowjackets, I got anchored to the couch for the rest of the day watching Deadloch. I found this on Prime listed as New, with a 7.5/10 IMDb rating, #4 in drama TV shows, a tag that said ‘Comedy,’ and New Season.
Interestingly, when I selected season one to look at the episodes, there was a line under Episode 1, but I didn’t remember watching the show, and usually if I watch a complete episode, I keep going… And when watching the show, there were spots that seemed familiar, but on the whole, I’d swear I hadn’t seen it1. It is set in a small seaside town in Tasmania. Some of the accents were kind of thick, and maybe I should have put on the closed captions, but almost all of the humorousness was understandable, and I didn’t have any trouble keeping up with the plot.
There were 8 episodes in season one, and they all clock in at around an hour. Besides a quick dinner, bathroom breaks, and drink refills, I spent from 12:30pm to 9:00pm hardly moving. That new season has just 6 hour long episodes, so you know where I’ll be tomorrow afternoon.
Two for Wednesday
1) The other day when I left Brookings, OR, and headed south to the California redwoods, I passed through one of the state’s agriculture inspection stations. As I stopped, the inspector popped his head out and said, “Nice, that’s a bright green.” As he waved me by, he said, “Have a great day.” There was nothing out of the ordinary, except for the inspector himself. His gray-silver hair was brushed straight back from his tanned, toned face, and his voice had that distinctive California surfer dude accent. If asked in a court of law, I would not be able to answer no to the question, “Was the inspector Josh Meyers doing his Gavin Newsom impression?”
2) Yesterday while dining at Heidi’s of Gresham, I noticed that the menu boasts, “Family owned and operated since 1968.” This is the second time I’ve eaten here, and the clientele is of a certain era. There are my “peeps” and older. I would guess that if there is anyone dining here that was born after 1968, they are with at least their parents, if not their grandparents.
Two For Tuesday
1) Coming north from California and on the way through Klamath Falls, I took a photo of the GTI in front of my favorite mural. This is the GTI’s second photo in front of the Kingsley Field mural, taken when I stopped here on the way to Vegas last November, back when the car was black.
2) It’s Saint Patrick’s Day, so it was time for a dinner of corned beef and cabbage. I stopped at Heidi’s of Gresham, and I was willing to bet that they had that as a special today, and they did. I finished everything except for 3/4 of the carrots; they are going in a chicken noodle soup I’m going to make.
Starting Home
But first, California. Another lighthouse, a Klamath with no Falls post office, some big-ass trees, and a Roadside America stop. Tomorrow, northward bound.
