The Sports Night Apportionment

Monday, October 28, 2013

Right now the Red Sox/Cardinals game is on the big TV and ESPN Monday Night Football is in a small window of the laptop. This display mix is as it should be, because, well, World Series game five vs. keeping track of one guy’s running yardage.

The World Series is tied at 2 games a piece, so it is now down to a best two out of three series with two of the games at Fenway Park. Tonight is not a must win for the FRS, but if they do it would really put the pressure on the Cardinals.

Yesterday morning the Purple Whales were a 43 point favorite entering the day’s football action. By the time the day was over I was trailing by 23 points! I still had a glimmer of hope tonight, my opponent had no one playing and I had my premier running back going, Marshawn Lynch. Mr. Lynch was predicted to get 17 points, but he has had two games over the needed 24 points this year, so I theoretically had a shot.

Had being the operative word. It is now nearly halftime and Marshawn has 8 yards for zero points.

The Emperor's Breakfast

After last night’s Detroit Flop the Red Sox are in the 2013 World Series. Their opponents will be the St Louis Cardinals and what I’m kind of hoping is it goes like the last time these two teams met in the “Fall Classic” in 2004, the Sox swept the Cardinals in 4 games. What will probably happen is more like when they meet in both the 1946 and 1967 World Series, the Cardinals won in 7 games.

What I do know is that I envision anywhere from four to seven long, tense nights on the couch watching baseball.

That’s Fair

Fair

We started the day with breakfast with the MMC at a Steak and Shake in Augusta and we’re ending it on the couch watching the FRS play playoff baseball. In between we walked around downtown Aiken to pay our bills followed by lunch on the porch of a small restaurant. This afternoon I finished up my center console modifications by installing a lighted push button that operates the garage door remote in the old cigarette lighter spot.

While I was in there I tried sliding the top of the upper shift boot up the shifter some. I mentioned a couple of posts ago that shifting into 1st and 3rd required a bit more oomph than it did with the old torn boot, well today, shifting into 5th was met with progressively more resistance. So much so that on this morning’s post breakfast drive the shifter popped out of 5th gear about three times just because of the tightness of the rubber boot wanting to force the shifter into neutral.

After dinner we took in the sights at the Western Carolina State Fair. It was a beautiful night for it as it actually felt like fall. They had quite a few awesome looking rides and that is pretty much all we did was look at them because even if we did want to try one out the lines were very long. The only thing we bought was a 1/4 pound of fudge from a vendor after 2 failed attempts to buy an ice cream cone from an outside cart.

Started up, went down, went up, back down, up again, down again, still down.

At Least Two More Beard Posts

Tuesday, October 8, 2013

I said in the middle of last month that I hoped I had made my last beard post, but as long as the FRS are still in the playoffs people will be writing about them, so shall I.

Grantland posted up another article about baseball, beards and Boston: Sportstorialist: Basebeards

Inside that article they linked to a Boston Globe photo essay that is worth a look: Red Sox? ?beard bonding? symbolic of attitude adjustment

The title says at least two more beard posts, this counts as one. The other will be the one with a photo of my shaggy mug when the Sox are done with the playoffs, which could come as early as this Friday, October 11th or as late as Thursday, October 31st.

We Own The East?

Monday, September 23, 2013

WOTEAll the clubhouse celebration photos of the FRS from last Friday showed the players all wearing this shirt. Do you think that they were contractually obligated to do so? Or did they just not care what the heck they were wearing after downing several Bud Lights (the official beer of MLB Playoff Clinching)?

First off they don’t own the East, at best they were leasing it for a year. Secondly, last night the Braves donned T-shirts with the same words on it. So just who does “own” the East?

The only thing worse than that shirt is this hat!

BeFunky_Sox-Beard

The night before last’s photo run through something called underpainting1 on BeFunky.com, an online photo editor with effects.

Some more (and hopefully the last) Red Sox Beard updates:

  1. Those dollar tickets for next Wednesday’s Dollar Beard Night game against the Orioles are “until supplies last” and there is no mention of how big the supply is.
  2. My RedSox Blue Beard photo made the official gallery: http://mlb.mlb.com/bos/social/virtual_beard_gallery.jsp?transactionId=318226764

The Power Of Facial Hair

Wednesday, September 11, 2013

My Red Sox Beard

I have been wearing a beard since 1978, before then I only sported a mustache because that is all the facial hair I could have as a Naval Air Crewman. Beards prevented full sealing of the oxygen mask.

Nearly every guy on this year’s FRS team is sporting a beard and they come in a large variety styles and lengths. It started with a couple of the off season’s free agent signees in Spring Training and over the season has spread through the clubhouse like a zombie virus.

I’ve always kept my beard trimmed, but I want to help the guys in their quest to go from worst to first and hopefully beyond this year, so until the Red Sox season ends, be it being swept in the division series or winning the World Series in seven games, I won’t trim my beard (sideburns and mustache excluded.)

Lucky for Donna my beard isn’t very thick and doesn’t grow very fast, so I won’t end up looking like a member of the Duck Dynasty or ZZ Top.

Here’s A recent NY Times story on the bearded Bosox: Bonding With Beards, the Red Sox Repair Their Clubhouse Chemistry and the team also features many winners in Grantland’s Base-Beards (The 2013 MLB Beard Awards)

sturgeon’s law

"Ninety Percent Of Everything Is Crap"
Derived from a quote by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, who once said, "Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That's because 90% of everything is crud." Oddly, when Sturgeon's Law is cited, the final word is almost invariably changed to 'crap'.
