Oh Yeah, That Makes Up For It Alright

Sunday, October 28, 2012

In Saturday’s mail there was a letter for me and the return address read Red Sox Nation. “Oh,” I thought, “Maybe this is a refund.”

Inside was a letter with as close as an apology as anyone would get “Thank you for being a part of the Red Sox Nation program. While it was a challenging season for all of us, the continued devotion and passion make Red Sox Nation unparalleled in sports.” Also enclosed was a Johnny Pesky replica baseball card, a 2012 Red Sox Nation sticker1 and the ability to download a couple dozen photo highlights2 from this season.

Oh yeah, that makes up for it alright.

1. There has been one of these every year until this year when it was replaced by a nifty Fenway Park 100 Years sticker.
2. Some might say that that is all the highlights they had this season.

Sunday in Aiken

Sunday, August 26, 2012

A short bike 10 mile ride. Breakfast at DD. Grocery shopping at Kroger.

Lunch. Wash the Purple Whale.

Afternoon spent watching the Weather Channel and listening to the FRS on the internet. Which is more related than you think in that they are both like rubbernecking at a car accident on the Interstate, horrible to see, but you just can’t turn away.*

Evening spent blogging and surfing the web.

Try and reel in your jealousy.

*On a related note, I just got an email that offered MLB.TV on my Roku for the rest of the season for a measly $10, so that if I actually wanted to see that wreck…

Looks Like I’m Not Going To Be A Winner (But I Won’t Be Alone)

Thursday, August 23, 2012

When I entered the Win/Loss Contest over on a The Joy of Sox blog I was feeling a bit pessimistic about the Red Sox Chances this year and picked 89 Wins & 73 Losses. The site owner chided me for my dim view, but boy it is looking like those totals are now pie in the sky optimistic.

Their current record is 59W & 65L (not counting tonight’s in progress game), so for my prediction to be correct the FRS will have to finish the season out by winning 30 and only losing 8 more games. I’m betting the the odds of that happening are less than 1%!

The worst record picked by anyone was 85 & 77 and if the Sox play the rest of the way at the same winning percentage as they have until now, their record will be the inverse of that worst pick and be 77-85.

Started down, went up, still up.

Putting Their Best Foot Forward

Wednesday, August 15, 2012

I was listening to the FRS online for a while and in the fourth inning they were leading 2-0. I went away and when I came back to the Red Sox home page to get Gameday tab, so I could check up on the game without listening to it. The first thing you see on the site is a picture of tonight’s pitcher Aron Cook with the headline, “Cook’s No-Hitter broken in 6th.”

I look down at the line score and it is the Orioles leading in the bottom of the 6th 5-2. Cooks no-hitter was gone alright, but so was the lead and his tenure on the mound for the evening.

Lime Kiln Lighthouse

Friday, July 20, 2012

-Monday July 2nd Afternoon-
Because the sun sets so late at this time of year that after checking in we even had time to go out, do a load of clothes, explore the touristy part of the town of Friday Harbor and pick up some stuff at the grocery store for snacks & a meal or two. After all that there was still time left to explore the island a bit, thinking of where we might go when we had more time on Tuesday.

While the hoi polloi and day trippers gravitate towards Friday Harbor, all the way on the north side of San Juan Island is Roche Harbor, a resort and it (from my limited observation) attracts the more tony crowd. We had dinner at a cafe out on the pier there and they didn’t turn us away.

As a bonus, while Donna and I were on our west coast road trip, so were the Red Sox allowing me to listen to the ballgame on the internet at the seeming normal time of 7:00PM. If you could call it a bonus, they lost 4 of the 6 games they played against Seattle and Oakland.

The Autotrophs Began To Drool

Sunday, June 17, 2012

Since we last spoke a week ago*:

The Miata has gotten a bath to wash last Saturday’s bugs off only to put some more back on yesterday when we took the MMC to Sardis.

I’ve got the new shocks for the Emperor in the garage which will probably get installed this week some time. Went with the non-adjustable Koni SRTs this time, because why spent twice as much for the adjustable Sport models.

The FRS have won 3 games and lost 4 which is pretty much on par for the way this season is going. Unfortunately the MFY won all seven (now nine in a row for them) putting the Red Sox (who are still in last in their division) 8 games out.

Mad Men is over for another year and we now have absolutely nothing to watch on TV except for The Big Bang Theory and we only have 4 episodes of that to watch before we are all caught up with all the Season 5 shows.

*Where the heck did it go? Seems like yesterday…

Started down, went up, back down, back up, down again, up again, down once more, still down.

sturgeon’s law

"Ninety Percent Of Everything Is Crap"
Derived from a quote by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, who once said, "Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That's because 90% of everything is crud." Oddly, when Sturgeon's Law is cited, the final word is almost invariably changed to 'crap'.
