Cowboy Up II

Wednesday, October 15, 2003

The Sox cowboyed up this afternoon and we (and the Yankees) got a taste of their potent offense that has been mostly sleeping this post season. Of course, being a Red Sox fan, we believe that they won game six, just to be able to lose it in the bottom of the ninth of game seven. In the past I think this attitude has rubbed off on the team itself, this year, maybe not.

I’m Sorry

Tuesday, October 14, 2003

I owe an apology to the entire Red Sox Nation. The reason Boston lost this afternoon’s game and now quite probably the ALCS is because I jinxed them. I just knew I shouldn’t do it, but I just couldn’t resist buying a Cowboy Up T-shirt. this afternoon off the internet.

I owe an apology to everyone else who probably doesn’t understand the above. Trust me, if you were a life-long Bosox fan like me, you’d know what I meant.

F*ckin Cry Baby Manny

Saturday, October 11, 2003

I had a rant all laid out for here tonight, but I’ve moved it out until tomorrow.

So much for the big showdown in Fenway this afternoon between Roger Clemmens and Pedro Martinez, what was billed as a pitchers duel turned into a mini brawl between the two teams. Started when Pedro hit a Yankee player. He took exception and when he slid into 2nd base he went out of his way to try and level Tod Walker of the Red Sox. Next inning Roger throws something high and inside to Manny Ramirez, not real close, but Manny gets upset and starts towards the mound – the benches clear. The low light of the whole thing (and quite possibly the funniest) was Pedro Martinez putting 70 year-old Don Zimmer in a headlock and wrestling him to the ground.

Later in the game some cluck of a fan drops into the Yankee bullpen and starts wailing on a player. I know hockey season has started, but aren’t the combatants supposed to be on ice skates.

Curt Cowboys Up

Sunday, October 5, 2003

The voice of the Boston Red Sox of my youth, Curt Gowdy, was in the stands today at Fenway Park. Curt was resplendent in a very nice tan cowboy hat. The Red Sox won the game to even the series with the A’s and force a 5th and deciding game in Oakland tomorrow. I hope he has tickets to the game on Monday and he wears that hat…

The Curse of the Bambino

Thursday, October 2, 2003

Well, the Red Sox lost to Oakland last night. I turned it off after 3 innings with the Sox down 3 – 0. They made it interesting, but still managed to lose 5 – 4 in 12. I wish today’s game was that close, the A’s scored 5 in the second on two hits a couple of walks and an error. The Red Sox vaulted offense never got it going and now they are down 0 – 2 in a best of 5 series.

The Sprint PCS question* for tonight’s game on FOX was, which town would be the most heartbroken if it’s team was bounced from the playoffs in the first round. The top vote getter was Boston with 37%. New York 27%, Minnesota 27% and Chicago 7%. Not a lot of true Red Sox fans must have voted because a true Red Sox fan revels in their misery. We will be heartbroken if they don’t get bounced out of the playoffs. It is better to not make it to the series at all then to lose the seventh game as usual, giving even more credence to The Curse of the Bambino.

* you can call for free on your Sprint PCS phone and vote or you can vote on the FOX web site.

Curse the Curse

Wednesday, September 17, 2003

Growing up in Connecticut only 50 miles from NYC you would think that when it comes to baseball I would be a Yankees fan, but no, I hate the Yankees. My mom is from Maine and my dad is from Massachusetts so I came by my affliction honestly, my parents were Red Sox fans. Every year I think this is the year. And recently they have actually been playing great ball and been in first place…for a while, but true to tradition they fade at the end. Sometimes still making the playoffs, but always snatching defeat from the jaws of victory in the end. This year I’m afraid will be no different.

I don’t get HBO, but when we were in Robbinsville this weekend the hotel we were in did. I saw a promo for an up coming show that I just had to see, The Curse Of The Bambino. It premiered last night and I got a co-worker to tape it for me.

Just finished watching it. Very nicely done. At times painful when they show some of those infamous moments that seem to bring life to the curse, Bucky Fucking Dent’s homer, Bill Buckner’s misplay, etc. And at others moving, interviews with famous and not famous New Englanders explaining their love of the Sox. Made me homesick, but also made me think that they still have time to blow their current 2-1/2 game wild card lead and end up out of the playoffs this year. Or maybe this is the year….the curse is finally lifted.

Cowboy Down

Sunday, September 7, 2003

The Red Sox lose their game against the Yankees today and it is my fault. I watched the game on ESPN Friday night and they won. I watched the game on Fox Saturday afternoon and they won. Today the game was not on TV, I couldn’t watch, so they lost. Sorry.

The rain started about the time the alarm went off this morning. The bike ride didn’t happen. We could deal with that, curled back under the covers and slept another hour. The rain paused for about 15 minutes a half an hour ago, but it is back at it steady. No picture taking today, for the web site or the contest.

The inclement weather created a perfect opportunity for a movie day. First up was Catch Me If You Can borrowed from a co-worker. After about 10 minutes, Donna wanted out. I convinced her to stick it out. After 25 minutes I wanted out, but she was now interested. At 25 minutes the phone rang and while she was talking to her mother I popped out the disc. Second movie was my latest purchase, Donnie Darko. I watched it all the way through (for the second time) while Donna watched half heatedly. This evenings entry was The Last Boy Scout, a totally predictable Bruce Willis movie, that is from Netflix and has been sitting on my coffee table for around a month. At least Donnie Darko was good.

sturgeon’s law

"Ninety Percent Of Everything Is Crap"
Derived from a quote by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, who once said, "Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That's because 90% of everything is crud." Oddly, when Sturgeon's Law is cited, the final word is almost invariably changed to 'crap'.
