Today we “paint rolled” Utah Scenic Highway 12. And until getting here and hearing it described, I had no idea what that meant. So, I know, and if you don’t, it means out and back on the same road. We drove 100 miles to the town of Tropic for a leisurely lunch. Afterward, we continued down UT-12 for about 15 miles to go through a couple of iconic arches and go over the road.
From there we were on our own. Some chose to go straight back to the hotel in Torrey, and some chose to duck into Bryce Canyon National Park. Me, I thought that maybe I’d try to go to Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, as I’d seen a sign for it not too far from our lunch spot. I looked up the web page and thought it looked cool. I plugged it into Maps and headed off. Problem is that was the entrance sign, but it was 17 unpaved miles to the visitor center, so I just came back to the hotel.
