Today we “paint rolled” Utah Scenic Highway 12. And until getting here and hearing it described, I had no idea what that meant. So, I know, and if you don’t, it means out and back on the same road.
We drove 100 miles to the town of Tropic for a leisurely lunch. Afterward, we continued down UT-12 for about 15 miles to go through a couple of iconic arches that go over UT-12 near the Red Canyon Visitor Center. Some got out of their cars, but I was happy to take a picture of one arch and them in it. I bought a postcard of the arch inside the visitor center.
From there we were on our own. Some chose to go straight back to the hotel in Torrey, and some chose to duck into Bryce Canyon National Park. Me, I thought that maybe I’d try to go to Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, as I’d seen a sign for it not too far from our lunch spot. I looked up the web page and thought it looked cool. Trouble was, Google Maps directed me to the entrance sign, getting to any place in the park was 17 miles down a gravel road. So I put my second coat of paint on the way back to our hotel.
