Glasses

4 I’s Two

Sunday, July 15, 2012

Alrighty now. The 5 pairs of glasses for Home Try On arrived Thursday afternoon. If you remember, I mocked them up a short time ago, and it is amazing how different they look in person.

It is also amazing how different they look when photographed in natural light:

#4 was supposed to be a Percy in Charcoal Fade, but it was unavailable, so I substituted the Crosby in Burgundy Fade. This turned out to be my least favorite frame, the color was too dark and the fade wasn’t much of one.

I showed them around at work to a few folks (of both genders) and most people agreed that the Reynolds in Striped Evergreen was the one they liked the best. I’m thinking that the main reason for that is they were the smallest and the least bulky of the five.

My favorite, sorta, was the Sinclair in Midnight Blue. I liked the shape, but the color was too dark for me. Unfortunately the other 2 colors this model is available in are probably too dark as well (if the colors match the ones on the different frames samples I got this time.) Next in line would be the Wiloughby in the Tenn Whiskey Fade, but that is almost too dark and then 3rd would have been the People’s Choice, the Reynolds.

I’ve lined up 5 more choices, including the elusive Percy in Charcoal Fade, with a few lighter colors. If the Percy isn’t available I’ve got a couple substitutes, but I hope it doesn’t come to that.

Hey! Four Eyes!

Friday, June 22, 2012

Three of the pairs of glasses I’m thinking of trying from Warby Parker on the 5 pairs, 5 day deal, I could mock up using their Virtual Try On service. I had to layout the Percy and the Reynolds myself using Paint Shop Pro. I’m still waiting on our local eyeglass place to get me the ones I picked out from them. If I haven’t from them in another week I’ll go online and try these.

We missed out on the usual Friday bike ride to work this morning because when we started loading up the bike I noticed the rear tire was flat, like no air at all. We either picked up something on the way home or I didn’t get the tube in right the other week and it finally failed.

Speaking of failure, the left fog light of the Emperor has burned out. Sounds like a Sunday afternoon project.

We Built A Wall, We Built The Pyramids

Thursday, June 21, 2012

Even though the title is one more line from TBBT theme song, I got nothing related to it. As matter of fact the only thing I do have is that the driver’s side fog light on the Emperor is burnt out.

OK, OK, maybe one more thing. It is time for some new glasses and I have been kind of thinking to go retro thanks to TDTVS2. Trouble is there are no frames like that to choose from at any of the local eyeglass places. Then along came Lifehacker the other day who turned me on to Warby Parker, so I may just give that Home Try On (5 Pairs, 5 Days, 100% Free!) a try.

Started up, went down, still down.

Hey Four Eyes

Tuesday, February 22, 2011

Yesterday was our yearly eye exams and after skipping it last year, this year we are going to go ahead and get new glasses. We have both gotten quite used to the EasyClip frames with the magnetic sunglasses. They only had a small selection in the store to chose from for women and zero for men. Donna picked a couple of decent ones, but the one she really liked had a very short vertical dimension. While the helpful staff member said that they were fine for progressive lens, they have about the same measurement as my current glasses do and it took me a long while to adjust to that configuration. Just because something is possible it doesn’t necessarily mean it should be done. We asked if we could hunt up some frames on the web and bring the model numbers to them so they could order a copy for us to try on and touch. The answer was yes.

This evening I did some shopping on the web. My current glasses have full frames and the pair I had before were rimless, so this time I split the difference and got semi-rimless. These are the four I picked out four for me to try:

The first pair on the left is one of the ones Donna liked in the shop. Her current glasses are gold with pearl accents and she wants a little more color this time, so I went looking for reddish frames. The other three are what I chose from online for her to try:

sturgeon’s law

"Ninety Percent Of Everything Is Crap"
Derived from a quote by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, who once said, "Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That's because 90% of everything is crud." Oddly, when Sturgeon's Law is cited, the final word is almost invariably changed to 'crap'.
