Washed Car Wash Suff

This afternoon I washed the GTI in preparation for its visit the PDX Wraps tomorrow to repair the torn vinyl from when I boneheadedly backed into a post in my own driveway. I drop it off there and then Uber to Tonkin Mazda to pick up Buckie who has sitting there with its new clutch slave & master cylinders for the last 3-1/2 weeks.

Three out of the four times I stared the GTI today I put my right foot on the brake pedal and turned the key making the car do abosulutely nothing. I have been so used to starting the Tucson for the past 4 weeks that I totally forgot I had push in that weird left pedal to get the car to start…

Busy day, got my Salted Caramel Latte, picked up my 85% junk/15% worth it mail, got my haircut and grocery shopped a few items to tide me over until Friday’s normal shop. Now it is time to plop on the couch and watch some Olympic ice hackey.

Day Drinking with Brian

Tuesday, February 10, 2026

After passing through the TSA area in the Albuquerque terminal, there were several display cases with all sorts of civilian and military aircraft. I looked all over at them, hoping to spot an EA3B. I found an RB-66 Destroyer, the Air Force’s variant, and had almost given up when I got close to one; it was the non-electronic version, an A3D Skywarrior.

I left ABQ on a 737 MAX, which has changeable neon lighting in the cabin, like it’s a Lexus or something. I got my first drink on this flight (I already paid for them for both legs when I bought the tickets); it’s a Doghead something or another, a vodka and lemonade in a can, that proudly proclaims it contains 2 shots. This helped blur the memory of this aircraft’s propensity to crash and kill hundreds in its first couple of years in service.

Coming in for landing in Vegas, there must be wildfires around because the mountains are very moody-looking. If you could erase the large swaths of subdivisions and color the mountains reddish, you would believe you are landing on Mars. This is enhanced by the fact that I was on the wrong side of the plane to see the Strip on touchdown.

When Donna and I flew into Las Vegas back in 1999, there were a few slot machines scattered around the terminal(s), but now there are enough to fill a small casino floor. Ninety percent of the seating while waiting in the concourse faces inward so you can stare at the slot machines in the middle of the round building. You can’t escape them even when staring out the window with them at your back

Lunch was on the C concourse, and I had a choice of Wendy’s or Popeyes. The line was longer at Wendy’s, so I went to Popeyes. Little did I know that the line length could have foretold the quality of the meal. I got the 3-piece spicy strips with fries as a side. I received four strips, and none of the three I did eat was remotely spicy. The best part of the meal was the fries, and I only finished a little more than half of them. It wasn’t the worst $20 fast food meal I’ve ever had, but it was in the top three.

On the flight back to Portland I was in a 737-700, the smaller, older brother to the first flight’s plane, sort of a used Toyota, and it showed. There were no charging ports, no spiffy neon lighting, and the emergency door seemed to let in more freezing outside air. One bright note, though: instead of the crappy pretzels on the morning flight, on this one we got a couple of bags of pistachios instead. Still feeling the buzz from drink number one on the first leg, I opted to pass on the drink on this flight, fearing I’d fall asleep and start snoring with my mouth open or, worse, have to use that little plastic-coated white bag in the seat pocket in front of me. I know, lightweight…

Flying into PDX, not only did I get a nice view of Mt. Hood, not as nice as the one on the way out, but I did get a peek at three Washington snow-covered mountains: Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainier, and Mt. Adams after Mt. Hood disappeared behind us. I’m kind of sorry I didn’t snap a picture, but it wouldn’t have been that nice, as the windows on the plane were all scratched from their long life and many washings.

Santa Fe, Last Day

Monday, February 9, 2026

Tomorrow I’ll have breakfast and head to the airport to fly back home. Watching a lot of Olympics, a trip to Lowe’s so Sally can take advantage of my military discount, and an afternoon walk.

It’ll be good to get back home where I keep the thermostat at 72 degrees compared to the 65° Sally keeps hers at. I get to sort through 4 weeks’ worth of mail. And the first couple days back will be nice before a weekend of rain.

Santa Fe, Day XIII

Sunday, February 8, 2026

Sunday is a day of rest, sort of. There was a morning trip to the gym, then the last thing in my job jar, tearing apart a flimsy metal shelf and a 40-year-old, very well-put-together table base. But since then it has been watching the Olympics and now a little NFL football game.

Santa Fe, Day 12

This is the third national monument in 4 days; the first two were free because they honored the Senior National Park Pass. This one required a dollar a head to make a reservation through Recreation.gov, five additional dollars each because it is on BLM land, and then there was $20+tax each for access to the Chaco Culture National Historical Park. Totally worth it.

We walked the entire 1.2-mile Cave Loop Trail and almost a mile of the Slot Canyon Trail. There was another 1/2 mile left that was blocked off because there was snow and ice covering it, just like at Carlsbad Caverns. Sally took over 70 photos, and I took around 60, including a bunch in vertical format. I narrowed mine down to about 30 and commenced to tweak them. Below are my best 12 with the sign above coming from Sally. Head over to Instagram to see the vertical ones.

The last one is an overview of the park from the Veterans Memorial Park, which was a 4-mile one-way trip further into the pueblo.

Santa Fe, Day 11

My Green Chili Cheeseburger survey results are in, and the winner is Dr. Field Goods. Between this visit and last, I have sampled a half dozen of them, and this is my absolute favorite. Probably 4 of the six were served on a burger bun. Two came wrapped in a tortilla, and this was how the Dr. Field Goods came.

Santa Fe, Day 10

Another day, another National Monument. Today we went north instead of south and visited Bandelier National Monument. We were going to go to Mesa Verde National Park on my November visit, but the government was shut down. This time of year it is too snowy and icy there for a visit, so today was kind of a warm-up for that Mesa Verde visit. There are cliff dwellings in Bandelier, but of a different sort. Visiting the national parks at this time of year is great because they are so uncrowded. While wandering the ruins for over an hour, we saw only one other couple.

sturgeon’s law

"Ninety Percent Of Everything Is Crap"
Derived from a quote by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, who once said, "Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That's because 90% of everything is crud." Oddly, when Sturgeon's Law is cited, the final word is almost invariably changed to 'crap'.
