As of Monday, April 13, 2026, at 9:00 PM Pacific Time:

1973 Fiat 124 Abarth Rally

2007 BMW Z4M

2002 Lexus SC430

I almost picked a different Fiat 124, but this one is already for the track. I drove one of these in 2007 at a Susan B. Komen event back in Georgia. This is an awkward-looking car, and putting the top up doesn’t make it any better.

Has It Been 12 Years Already

Go read this first: See You In 2026

Too bad I don’t still live in Aiken. I wonder if Firestone’s database is nationwide and still intact after a subsequent dozen more years. Oh, never mind; I just remembered I had visited the local Firestone last February when I shipped new tires from Tire Rack to get them mounted on old Miata wheels for the new, no longer owned, Miata.

Okay, here is a photo of a Miata with tires that had nothing to do with Firestone:

Northwest Transit Band

My next-door neighbor and I have been trying to arrange an evening out via postcard for several weeks, tonight was the night. There is a place called Celebrities Parkway Grill less than a 1/4 mile away. Neither one of us had been in there, but it was chosen so that we could walk over and home in case any alcohol was consumed.

This is really a glorified bar more than a “grill,” and on Saturday nights they have live music. Tonight’s band du jour was the Northwest Transit Band. We arrived at around 7:00pm, and they were just setting up. We ordered food; she had the Crispy Chicken Salad, and I had the Crispy Chicken Sandwich. I ordered a beer, and she had a vodka lemonade. The food was consumed, and about then the band started up. We ordered a second round and listened to covers of songs we mostly knew. The first thought was after drink number two, when the band took their first break, we would duck out. When the waitress came by and looked at us, we couldn’t exactly hear what she said, so we nodded. Next thing we knew, there was a third drink delivered to the table.

I said that I wasn’t much for dancing, but apparently 2.5 beers is just enough, and with her enthusiasm, the next thing I knew, we were on the dance floor with tens of other people, swishing around and making vague dance-like movements. We danced a couple more songs with a break between and finished off those drinks. About that time the band took its second break, and we settled up and walked home.

She seemed to have a good time, and I did as well; maybe we can make it a monthly-ish thing. I’m off to write another postcard…

Dear Edward

Thursday, April 9, 2026 Leave a Comment

This all started back in the COVID Times, 2020-2021, back when we lived in Klamath Falls. We still were getting our monthly haircuts and stopping at the local bookstore, Canvasbak Books, and I picked up a book called “Falling Woman.” It told the story of one person who may have survived the midair explosion of a passenger jet on a cross-country flight and the NTSB agent who searched for them. I thoroughly enjoyed that story, so a couple months later when I found another book along the same lines, I snatched it up.

This one was called Dear Edward and is about a 12-year-old who is the lone survivor of another cross-country air disaster. I also enjoyed the heck out of this book too. In this book we get the backstory of his family and several other passengers too. It follows our survivor and what happens in the aftermath. We also get the stories of the other passengers before and their families afterwards. The title stems from the letters our “miracle boy” gets from around the world asking if he saw their relation onboard and other questions. His aunt and uncle kept him in the dark about them.

On another splunking expedition poking around on Apple TV+ I found a limited 10-part series called Dear Edward. Yup, it is based on the book. So of course I started watching it. Aside from the ludicrous-looking plane crash site and the finding of Edward, it started out pretty good. In the book Edward and his next-door female friend, Shay, discover the letters he’s been getting and decide to write back to some and even physically meet some.

The show really highlighted a lot of the survivor’s feelings in the aftermath. The letters get a brief mention in episode two, and he finally gets his hands on the letters in the last 5 minutes of episode nine. He and the cohort actually start the reading of them in the last 5 minutes of episode ten, the last episode. Around episode five I started anticipating the letters’ plot line. Around episode number seven I was going to bail entirely on the show, but I stuck it out just to see where the letters got into the hands of Edward and Shay.

I think I’m going to re-read the book again to maybe get the sour taste out of my mouth.

Bad Sisters Redux

Tuesday, April 7, 2026

Today’s post is sort of a callback to something I said back in July of 2024:

I’m a little disappointed in Bad Sisters. The show itself was great: humor, pathos, an extremely unlikeable villain, and a great twist at the end with the perfect ending. So why am I disappointed? They have greenlit a second season, and what the heck could it possibly be about?

Last time I was subscribed to Apple TV+ I started to watch the first episode of that second season. I made it less than halfway through the 1st episode before turning it off. I am now resubscribed to watch the 3rd season of Shrinking and I gave Bad Sisters second season a second try, and I made it all the way through episode one. But couldn’t go any further.

Well…guess what? I was poking around on Apple TV+ looking for something else to watch, and failing to find anything, I thought maybe I’ll just go ahead and just watch the rest of season two of Bad Sisters. It turned out to be a pretty decent watch. In all, it paled in comparison to the first season, but I don’t regret watching it. Plus, I had developed a pretty big crush on Bibi played by Sarah Greene. I think it was the eye patch…

Track, Daily, Crush

Monday, April 6, 2026

Today’s post is a rerun from exactly six years ago. I’ve been kind of having trouble finding things to post about, so I think I might restart doing this thing again; that way I’ll have at least one easy post a week.

As of Monday, April 6, 2020 at 9:00 PM pacific time:

I don’t know, maybe because it was blue… Blame this on watching too much Motortrend channel. I know the 80’s are cool again, but come on!

Run To The Coast

Sunday, April 5, 2026

This is my 5th trip with the Mt. Hood Miata Club, the third one involving twisty roads and by far the most driving (234 miles). We headed to the coast to look at a lighthouse, eat lunch, and bask in the springtime sunshine. There were a dozen cars and 15 people in attendance. Of those, I recognized one fellow mainly because he was the only other one with an NB and he came to the Speed Tour at the track.

sturgeon’s law

"Ninety Percent Of Everything Is Crap"
Derived from a quote by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, who once said, "Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That's because 90% of everything is crud." Oddly, when Sturgeon's Law is cited, the final word is almost invariably changed to 'crap'.
