That 70's Show

That 70’s Show

Kind of seems like it don’t it?

A discussion on height came up with a co-worker the other day and when the conversation turned to high heels, I mentioned that at one time I had a pair of high-heeled sneakers. Well, not actual high heels, really, but more like platform sneakers. Photographic proof was required.

This sent me looking through some old photo albums1 to find this one picture Donna and I remember from a trip to the northeast way before we were married. We found the right album and even found the right page, but the picture we both remember with the two of us in it at a snow covered rest stop somewhere along the NY State Thruway wasn’t there. We must have pulled it out to show some one along the way and it never made it back in or it ended up in a different book. So I scanned the above image of me that sort of showed my high-rise kicks.

Then I did get a little marooned in the past and decided to scan a couple more photos, one of Donna from that time frame and one of the two of us. Man, we were cute as all get out 40 years ago.

1) Back when people used a thing called a camera to expose chemically treat plastic film to a scene they saw, which was then taken to a drug store where it was turned into a 4 inch by 6 inch glossy piece of paper and displayed on the pages of something resembling a notebook.

Blimp!

Goodyear Blimp

We are visiting Donna’s sister and family in Florida and this morning we told them we were going for a walk. Well, we went for a WALK! Needing a couple of things and with the only place open on Turkey Day around here that would carry all of them being a CVS, off we trekked to a shopping center a little over 2-1/2 miles away. As a bonus, there is a DD nearby for mid-trip refreshments.

We were about a half a mile from their house on the return trip when I heard a distinctive buzzing sound, I knew instantly what it was, a blimp. The sound of one flying is very unique and to me unforgettable, but maybe that is because of my first experience of hearing one.

Back in my high school years the favored hang out of my friends and I was behind a junior high school just down the street from one friend’s house. There was a slight hill at the end of the big open field that served as the school’s soccer field. We would sit near the top, close to the tree line, surveying what we considered our kingdom.

Many a summer night was spent laying back on the hill consuming purloined beers and smoking cigarettes while solving the important issues of the day. One particular evening after three of us had finished off a couple of hand rolled smokes we heard this strange buzzing sound. First we each looked at each other to make sure we weren’t the only one hearing it. Then we started speculating wildly as to what it might be, there was of course the typical paranoia, but soon that changed thoughts of a possible UFO.

As the noise peaked, the stars that were bright in the sky above us started to disappear. Soon, nearly all the sky above us was black and the buzzing was deafening. We knew any minute now that we would be beamed into the space ship and be confronting little green men.

Suddenly the sky erupted into daylight as thousands of LEDs started to spell out a word – G……O……O……D……Y……E……A……R

A Decade Ago

Yesterday’s post got me thinking…uh,oh.

I’ve seen quite a few blogs that have links to related posts below the current post, so there must be plenty of plugins out there that would allow me to do something similar, but for posts 10 years ago. Turns out there are not.

In my searching one of the terms I used was “wordpress anniversary posts” and it didn’t turn up what I wanted, but it did lead to a free theme created for WordPress’s 10th Anniversary, which is this year. Looked neat and I tried it for all of 30 secs, but you could customize the header (at least not without a lot of coding), so I uninstalled.

I did find a plugin called A Year Before that looked perfect. But for whatever reason it showed posts from the wrong date about 10 years ago. I had to try several variations in the settings until I got it right. Turns out, instead of putting 10 in the years before box, you had to put 9 in there and then add 365 in the days before box.

Happy Birthday WordPress! Buy the shirt!

Blast From The Past

Tuesday, July 23, 2013

I’ve been kind of slack on the blogging around here, with nothing much interesting to write about, I thought maybe I’d fill this spot up with a scintillating post from 10 years ago. Back in 2003 this was actually two blogs The Miata Diaries and Brian’s Daily Rant and I posted something on both every day. I hoped to find something good and I struck out, apparently it was kind of a dull day then too.

From Brian’s Daily Rant:

When Will I Watch A Movie Again?
It has been two weeks at least since I’ve watched a DVD. Right now there are 4 Netflix rentals on the coffee table waiting a spin. ( Rabbit-Proof Fence, Moonlight Mile, Spirited Away and Adaptation ) Also stacked up there are 3 other movies from my Co-Worker DVD Swap Club: Pork Chop Hill, Tuck Everlasting and K-19. Plus on top of those I have A Brother From Another Planet that I picked up in a truck-stop in rural North Carolina for $4.88. I guess I\’m going to have to take a break from writing in 3 blogs and reading 10 for a night or two…

From The Miata Diaries:

House Cleaning Day
Did a little sprucing up around here, very little, but I feel better.
1) This site is now a proud member of the Blogging Brians, so I added a link to the left.
2) I got rid of a stale weblog that hadn’t been updated since like March from the Mortal Blog list and added Blogumentary, go check it out.
3) This page’s extension is now PHP instead of HTML. I snagged a script that allows me to keep a constantly updated set of stats in my search for ET and installed it on the left. Thanks Sam Ley.

The money figure was money spent on the Miata and of course I was keeping track of the top transitions back then too.

Chocolate House

Chocolate House

One of the open shelves in the new kitchen, the one above the stove, will have a couple of neat old metal cars in it. One of which reminded us of an VW bus we had back on Guam when we were first married. We got out the old photo albums looking for a suitable picture of us to add to the shelf. We found one of us standing near said bus, but for a couple of reasons, one of which would be that I’d have to explain what is happening, we didn’t want to use it. So we found this one of us taken on our wedding day by one of our witnesses just outside the courthouse where we tied the knot and thought it might do nicely.

No, that is not the courthouse we are standing in front of, it is the Chocolate House in the Plaza de Espana, which consists of a couple of buildings still standing of the Spanish Governor’s house from the 1600’s.

sturgeon’s law

"Ninety Percent Of Everything Is Crap"
Derived from a quote by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, who once said, "Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That's because 90% of everything is crud." Oddly, when Sturgeon's Law is cited, the final word is almost invariably changed to 'crap'.
