Orphaned

Monday, June 3, 2013

I have been orphaned by a TV show. Left out in the black.

I can’t get any of my small circle of sci-fi breathern to watch it, and to make matters worse there is just enough violence/gore to have made Donna stop watching the show with me after like the second episode. I’m all alone in the real world, but at least I have tens of snarky commenters at the virtual watercooler that is the AV Club website to share my thoughts with.

In a nice bit of internet symmetry here is an article from another of my favorite virtual watercoolers, written by the guy who reviews the show for the previously mentioned watercooler, that discusses the show, why I’m nearly alone and why I shouldn’t be. Orphan Black, the Pre-Recap-Era Throwback Sci-Fi Show You Should Catch Up With.

Orphan Black just finished its first season run of ten shows on BBC America* Saturday, but it might still be available On Demand from your local cable company. If not, this is the “Age of the Internet”, someone, somewhere, has recorded the show, thoughtfully edited out all the commercials and torrented the epsiodes…

*It has already been renewed for a second season.

Super Bowl Monday

Monday, January 28, 2013

First we watched the Super Bowl for the game. Then we watched for the commercials. Now we don’t even have to even watch to see the commercials. They’re on the internet weeks before. Here are three of the car related ones.

Double Standard

Tuesday, January 15, 2013

Last week on Justified’s season four premier there is a small scene in the first few minutes that is there to set up the plot line our intrepid hero will travel. And in it, because its on cable, they tossed in a bit of nudity. The woman is totally starkers, but Timothy Olyphant is wrapped in a towel. Kind of a double standard, huh? I’m betting more than one viewer might have enjoyed the sight of Timmy’s hiney.

Cutting the Cord

Friday, December 7, 2012

Yesterday I called Atlantic Broadband and had them stop our cable TV subscription. They hated to see us go, they offered $20 off a month and they offered a bundled deal. No thanks.

We’re still keeping the cable internet. The CSR asked if we want to upgrade to the faster internet service? It’s only $5 more a month, but you need one of our modems that you can rent for $6 a month or buy for $90. No thanks.

Right now with a cheap set of rabbit ears we get the big 4 commercial networks, three of them have sub-channels and one has two. So that’s ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, CW (minor league network), My12 (old TV shows), MeTV (really old TV shows), Bounce (geared towards African-American viewers), and The Country Network (music videos.) All of them come in excellent, except for FOX & Bounce which gets pretty pixelated sometimes. There is absolutely no PBS/ETV. In an effort to overcome those shortcomings I ordered a Leaf, should be here next week.

The XXX Olympiad

Monday, August 6, 2012

My new favorite Olympic spectating sport is Women’s Water Polo. Not only do you have to tread water or swim while controlling the ball, but there is some serious pushing, shoving, dunking and grabbing going on. It is not so evident in the usual overhead camera angles, but when they show the action using an underwater camera you really get a great feel of what is really going on.

I was watching a match yesterday between Spain and Great Britain and during one of those underwater views, when there was a bit of grabbing going on, I almost got a view one of the player’s naked boobies. Forget the bikinis of the women’s beach volleyball, they leave too much to the imagination.

It seems like this is not so rare an occurrence as wardrobe malfunctions have been captured at least two other times in the course of these games, on 8/1 during a US vs Spain match & yesterday during Australia vs China.

When I discussed this suit grabbing thing with my wife she felt that it was cheating and had the perfect way to prevent it, make ’em compete in the nude. Sound like an awesome idea to me.

Neanderthals Developed Tools

Tuesday, June 19, 2012

Finished watching the last episode of TBBT tonight. Kind of schmaltzy. We had stopped watching the show after Season 3 because of the direction it was taking. We then restarted after catching a couple of Season 4 re-runs because we caught ourselves laughing at it anyway. But now I sense another break in watching coming up for Season #6.

I have one brickbat for Dunkin Donuts. They have (re)started a Coffee Club Punch Card, you know, buy 8 cups and get number nine free. The trouble with the card is it is about a 1/16 of an inch to long to fit in my wallet’s credit card slot. Took a couple missed punch opportunities before I took some scissors and trimmed its length enough that it fit right in front of my DD gift card.

To balance things out I have a bouquet for them as well. Donna and my favorite spot for dining at DD is on the bar-like tables with tall chairs that face out towards the parking lot. Breakfast goes so much better with some people watching thrown in. Trouble is, our view is frequently blocked by those opaque giant cups of coffee and breakfast sandwich static clings. Much to our pleasure, last week we sat down, we could see right through them. They finally adopted the kind that are full of holes making them appear solid on the outside and slightly darkly tinted on the inside.

Started down, went up, still up.

sturgeon’s law

"Ninety Percent Of Everything Is Crap"
Derived from a quote by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, who once said, "Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That's because 90% of everything is crud." Oddly, when Sturgeon's Law is cited, the final word is almost invariably changed to 'crap'.
