Santa Fe

Santa Fe, Day 8

Tuesday, February 3, 2026

Back on Saturday my post was about sending in new photos to RadioParadise and I actually tried to do so on Sunday. But that didn’t go so well. I entered eight pictures in the slots provided on the upload page and hit enter. A couple of seconds later I received a 413 Forbidden. Huh? So I tried just one photo and got the same 413 error.

All the photos are in 4K resolution of 3840×2160, and most of them are around 1.5 MB. I speculated maybe there was a 1MB limit. Turns out I had 4 photos, so I tried them one at a time. Each time I received a page that said I had successfully uploaded a file, but there were several lines at the top of the page that said, Warning:Blah, blah, blah.. So I sent in a screenshot next on the upload page.

Yesterday morning I received an email back from Mike V. the RP Photo Editor:

Hi Brian,
I see that you have uploaded several new images to the RP Slideshow. Unfortunately, that is all I can see.

They are having some issues with a new interface for the slideshow, and unfortunately it is not all going to plan. All I can see is a black screen. Therefore, I am unable to accept or decline your photos. Please save them, and as soon as all returns to normal, I will send you an email. I have no idea how long this problem will take to fix.

To be continued…

Preposterous Abundance

1) Sally had a dentist appointment.
2) I did something from my job jar.
3) We went out getting body shop estimates for the Tucson.*
4) There was a brief walk and a trip to the grocery store.
5) And we watched Molly’s Game.

*Oh, did I forget to mention that while in Hammond I tried to squeeze the Tucson into a narrow parking spot of a restaurant and scraped the front bumper and fender of her car, all along a parked one? Between her body work and theirs, it will definitely be the most expensive bowl of gumbo I will ever eat.

Santa Fe, Day 6

Sunday, February 1, 2026

A totally unexciting day, but a very productive one.

1) An hour at the gym (see above.)
2) Sally did some yard work.
3) We delivered a car that has been sitting in her yard since last May to someone who is brokering its sale.
4) Lunch out.
5) Facetimed with her mom.
6) Did some guerrilla car shopping for the Tucson replacement.

Tomorrow is likely just as unexciting…

Santa Fe, Day 5

Columbia River Gorge, Maryhill, WA

Spent most of the afternoon photoshopping images.

I have previously submitted photos to Radio Paradise for use on their slideshow that is a visual element while streaming their music. The first batch was of 33 images (see ’em here), and they selected 13 or 14. Of those, I still see about 4 of them from time to time.

I’m going to send them a new batch, and this time around I’ve selected 23 for uploading (see ’em here). When the 1st batch went up, they wanted only the image, but since then, they let you a bit of text in the lower right corner Copyright or your name or webpage. What I’m doing is adding just where they were taken because when I see a cool image of a place, I always wonder where it is.

Now that I’ve got Santa Fe Sally hooked on RP’s mellow mix, she wants in on it too. So I cropped, resized, and added text to 18 of hers that’ll get uploaded too. It’ll be fun to see how many of ours get used.

A Santa Fe Day

Thursday, January 15, 2026

For Christmas I ordered Sally one of those adventure scratch-off things from Reach International Outfitters for the state of New Mexico. There are 3 cards for Santa Fe, if you count the one for the Santa Fe National Forest. We had a down day, so she said scratch one off and we’ll do it.

The one I picked recommended going to Meow Wolf. This was met with a resounding, “No, thank you.” First off, it is basically sensory overload and more suitable for kids and stoners. Secondly, it is $35 a person, and lastly, and most importantly, we fit neither of those two previous categories.

The second one suggested a visit to the Santa Fe Museum of Art. This was met with slight indifference. Turns out neither one of us is a big art lover. If we went, we would probably enjoy it a moderate amount, so we decided instead to go to the New Mexico History Museum, which we both would enjoy leaps and bounds over some art. We spent maybe 2-1/2 hours wandering the 4 floors of exhibits. One of the featured exhibits was Zozobra: A Fire That Never Goes Out. It’s Santa Fe’s version of Burning Man, but really those roles should be reversed, as Zozobra predates Burning Man by 60 years.

So, while the folks at Reach International Outfitters went 0 for 2, it did spur us into going to a museum, so we’ll give them a 1/2.

Dualling Shovels

Wednesday, July 30, 2025

I feel a little cheated, don’t they fact check over there at the Roadside America HQ? Back in May on the way back from Hammond with Santa Fe Sally I made us stop just outside of Wichita Falls, TX to take a photo of the Largest Shovel in Texas at 15 feet high. In the blog post about it I said, “… someone will take that as a challenge and make one 25′ tall somewhere else in the state.”

I have been pre-planning another jaunt with Sally for later this year. Today I was looking for a different route across the great state of Texas to go between Santa Fe and Hammond. We did it last time with a single overnight stop in Bowie, TX, and we’d would like to do that again, but I’d like a different path to mix it up. So I started dragging the blue line on Google Maps around and came up with something promising that loops south of Dallas.

The next thing I look for is hotels at the overnight spot, some small towns in the middle of nowhere don’t have many places we’d stay in, we have some standards, you know. Off I went to Roadside America to see if there is something weird that would hopefully be near a driver’s change spot. I opened the Texas map and zoomed into an area where I thought we would be and saw something labeled World’s Largest Shovel. Wait a minute, I thought I’d been to the largest shovel in Texas? I had, but it was only the tallest one until this beast was created in 2020.

sturgeon’s law

"Ninety Percent Of Everything Is Crap"
Derived from a quote by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, who once said, "Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That's because 90% of everything is crud." Oddly, when Sturgeon's Law is cited, the final word is almost invariably changed to 'crap'.
