Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe

Today was a “rest day” of sorts because the main event was just a drive around Lake Tahoe. We drove in a clockwise loop so as to be on the side of the road that is closest to the lake for better views. At some points the lack of guard rails and steep drop offs made for a tighter grip on the steering wheel, but worth it. The first half on the left of the lake was all in California. It seems that this time of year is when CalTrans does all the maintenance on their two lane CA-89. Felt like we came across a flagman holding up a long line of cars every 5 miles. Thankfully the Nevada side was almost entirely construction free making for smooth sailing. With stops, including one for lunch, it took a little over four hours to drive the 75 miles.

Owens Valley

Today was a long interesting drive from Barstow to South Lake Tahoe, California. Almost all of it was on US395 through high desert with mountains on both sides. The last 1/3 of the drive consisted of travel through a place called Owens Valley before we climbed into the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The valley road was similar to Interstate, 4 lane divided before turning in 2 lanes, with occasional passing lanes, for the climb over a 7,000 foot pass and another of over 8,000. With a final drop of 2,000 feet to Lake Tahoe.

Owens valley was interesting for several reasons, we stopped at two of them, but were flabbergasted by a third. The City of Los Angeles gets about half of it water from here via 223-mile aqueduct, turning once massive lakes into alkali flats. We did stop and tour Manzanar, the first Japanese American Internment camp during WWII. Around 110,000 Japanese Americans on the west coast were rounded up and sent to 10 such camps, with 10,000 ending up here in the shadow of the Sierras. Our other stop was Mono Lake, a place Mark Twin called, “lifeless, treeless, hideous desert… the loneliest place on earth.” He is kind of right, but the shallow, very salty, lake has a weird beauty to it due to its tufa columns.

Sonata of the Desert

Saturday, May 14, 2016

We were supposed to spend 4 days in San Diego, but we just couldn’t stand being tied down here for more than two. Don’t get us wrong, there is a lot to do here, but we had crammed our drive time to Seattle into 4 days which would have meant 4 looong days on the road which are not really to our liking.

So we changed a bunch of reservations around and picked up the rental car last night. We rented from National because we get a good discount through Emerson and it is so cool to walk into the Emerald Aisle and pick which ever car you want. Pickings were slim, when we we showed up. Nothing but a couple of Altimas, Sonatas, small SUVs and 4 homely last generation Chevy Impalas, so I picked a Sonata. It is the newer style that looks a bit different, but on the road is very familiar.

We left San Diego on I-8 for about 40 miles before turning north on the smaller state routes that took us into the mountains. Our first stop was the little town of Julian for a slice of apple pie. Donna had read about the place in the California travel guide and it was just the right distance from the start for a break. As usual we were about 11 minutes too early for the opening of the Julian Pie Company, so we stocked up on supplies at the Julian Market including splitting a slice of apple pie from their deli. By the time we were done shopping the real place was now open, so we went over there and Donna had a slice of hot fresh apple pie and I had a slice of pecan.

From there we took a side trip to Borrego Springs to see some metal animals an artist had placed along the road into town (another California Visitor Guide tip) before it was down the mountain into the desert. On Thursday we flew right over the Salton Sea and today we drove right along the shore of it on our way to Joshua Tree National Park.

After the park, once past the town of 29 Palms, the last 80 miles was spent on a two lane road through the desert (and a random dust storm) to end up in the cow town of Barstow. Our Holiday Inn for the night is right next to an Outlet Mall so we did a little shopping which has now increased the amount of goods to such a level that it has outgrown the capacity of our two suitcases. We’ll probably have to mail a box back to SC once we get to Granite Falls.

McLeod Museum

We took a drive on Saturday to scout a route for a future MMC event, but we didn’t take the Miata, it was just a little too cold (and windy) for a convertible drive. The picture above is from the destination, the McLeod Farms Antique Museum.

It was even colder today. We got up this morning for our usual Sunday morning breakfast bike ride. Our first stop was downtown at the ATM because we didn’t have any cash and after were going to go another dozen miles or so before eating. The temps were in the upper 30s with the wind chill near freezing. We both felt uncomfortably cold in the 15° below normal, so after the ATM we just rode home and got in the car to drive for breakfast. Post breakfast we did the weekly grocery shopping and we have not been outside since.

This afternoon we sat glued to the couch watching the only golf tournament we ever watch, the Masters.

I have been seeing Dr. PCP twice a year forever for him to run my cholesterol numbers and I can’t believe it has been 4 years since I put up the numbers…Maybe because they looked pretty much like this latest batch of results, cholesterol & LDL within limits and my triglycerides too high with my HDL not high enough.

Mr. Miata Goes To Mini Tec

Mini Tec Visit

Man, I’m down to blogging once a week anymore, not with a bang but a whimper maybe?

Friday the Emperor got a bath because on Saturday the MMC was going on a day trip. Saturday the Emperor passed through the 163,000 mile barrier somewhere on SC-28 between North Augusta and McCormick.

About a month ago an item popped up in my Google Miata newsfeed about a company that is selling kits to transplant a Honda V6 into the first & second generation Miatas. They were just a hundred miles up the road in the small town of Royston, GA.

Mini Tec has been in business for 13 years hot rodding the original 1959-2000 Mini by stuffing Honda VTEC motors in them and now they have branched out in the Miata. A couple of emails and a phone call later and I arranged a tour of the place for the Masters Miata Club. We had seven cars and a dozen people follow Donna and I to the town that used to be just famous for being the boyhood home of Ty Cobb.

BJ and Norm welcomed us with open arms (and snacks), showed us around their shop and regaled us with tales of daring do. They had a couple of converted cars, an NA and an NB, with their hoods popped up showing those Honda V6 engines. The motor almost looks like it belongs there and as it turn out the the conversion actually is lighter than the stock get up and you end up with about twice as much horsepower.

They offered rides in the NA and only one of our group took them up on it. They zipped off up the road the shop was on and were gone for about 5 minutes. You could hear Dennis hooting a hundred yards down the road on the way back. This looks like big fun, but it would change the whole character of the car in my opinion and is not even on my radar, but if you desire big hp & torque numbers or are a hot rodder at heart, this might your ticket.

Started down, went up, went down, back up, back down, still down.

Famous?

Bonus 1 - Famous Work of Architecture
Bonus 1 – Famous Work of Architecture: The definition of famous is in the eye of the beholder and Rainbow Row in Charleston, SC was being beheld by a half dozen Oriental tourists, including one standing in the middle of the street while his companions took photos.

The sharp eyed amongst you might have noticed that yesterdays info Moss Motoring Challenge line mentions 4 points and 270 miles, but there was only one photo and I mentioned its nearness to home. Well, that is because the Wilcox was on the way out of town on our way to Charleston, SC. One of this year’s Bonus Point opportunities is a photo that includes a famous work of architecture. While my first thought of Fallingwater by Frank Lloyd Wright and even though our big trip was going right near there, you can’t get a car close to the house.

With the year winding down and the pressure on, we came up with the only real famous bit of architecture we could think of in South Carolina, Rainbow Row. Turns out it was harder that we thought to get a picture of me, sign, car and row house into a photograph. Oh well, hopefully our effort will be worth the two points…

Destination - Location Filmed In A Movie

One of the last of the few Motoring Challenges we had left was “Destination – Location Filmed in a Movie.” We haven’t tried too hard to find anything because we had an ace in the hole, not too far away from the ol’ homestead is The Wilcox. This historic Inn served as the clubhouse for the Carolina Pines Golf & Polo Club in 2007’s cinematic masterpiece Who’s Your Caddy? It was sort of a riff on Cadyshack and caused quite a stir in Aiken while they were filming it, at the Valve Store(TM) we used to get daily updates on sightings of Big Boi or Lil’ Wayne…

I think you can watch the whole movie on YouTube, but you don’t have to watch too much to see the Wilcox’s screen debut. At about a minute and a half in, two Range Rovers full of an Atlanta rap mogul and his entourage pull up in front of the place. Of course it wasn’t decorated for Christmas then (they filmed in the fall), plus they covered the paved street with gravel for some reason and they also had a bunch of stuffy looking whites guys sitting in the rocking chairs on the front porch. Take a look.

sturgeon’s law

"Ninety Percent Of Everything Is Crap"
Derived from a quote by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, who once said, "Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That's because 90% of everything is crud." Oddly, when Sturgeon's Law is cited, the final word is almost invariably changed to 'crap'.
