Hindsight Is 20/20 (Part I) With A Little Divot In It

Thursday, August 25, 2016

When we bought the CTBNL we knew it had several minor blemishes on the exterior. David was apologetic about those conditions, but he needn’t have been, the Emperor’s exterior had it share of scuffs, scratches, chips and dings, so we were used to overlooking minor surface imperfections.

The one thing that we did have trouble overlooking was a small stone chip in the windshield, about in the center, both horizontally and vertically. I thought if I gave it a few weeks I might be able to get used to it and it would ‘disappear’, but Donna said, “Why don’t you see how much it would be to fix?”

There are only a couple places in town that do auto glass, so I called one. I explained the problem as best I could and he said, “That sounds like a (I forget the term), we probably won’t be able to repair that. But bring it in and we’ll look at it to be sure.” The place is located on the busy south side of town and right after work would be peak traffic, so I really didn’t want do that. As it happens the other shop is a mere one block off of our usual route to and from work, so I decided to stop there instead and have them look at it.

Last Thursday we stopped at B & B Glass on the way home. When we get there, there is a guy in the office on the phone and he holds up his index finger, the universal sign of I’ll be with you in a minute. When he hangs up he comes out front with us, looks at the windshield and says, “That might be fixable, but we don’t do that. I can give you a guy’s number that will do it for you.”

Donna and I follow him back inside so he can get a piece of paper and he finishes the thought with, “Something that size and shape might not hold for long, he charges $50, but it is probably worth a try.” Not knowing, so out of curiosity I ask, “Well, how much is a new one?” “$250,” comes the reply. I look at Donna and say, “Why spend 20% of the cost of the new one on something that may or may not work?” She looks at me and then she looks at the guy and asks, “When can you do it?” He says, “Not tomorrow, how’s Monday?” Sounded good to us.

Monday morning, we drive two cars and we stop at the glass place. I toss the keys through the slot and hop in the Sonata. Work passes slowly, but it is finally done and we drive back to the glass place. As we get close we can see a silver Miata parked out front, good, must be finished. I park the Purple Whale right next to it and hop out to look. No chip, but when I look around the edges of the glass it just doesn’t look right. They’ve used some generic gasket, but worse still there are gaps in the two upper corners between the end of the gasket and the windshield frame. You can see the black sealant underneath. Not good.

So I walk inside and find the guy and tell him I’m not happy. He comes out with me and I point to the corners and tell him the gasket doesn’t even look like the right one. “We used the one that came with the glass,” he tells me. I say, “Either way, it looks like this glass has to come up further to the top and how about we get an OEM gasket?” “OK, can you leave it overnight?” “No problem,” I say, “Just keep it the shop or at least inside the fence.”

Did they think I wouldn’t notice the gaps?

to be continued…

Long Journey Home

Monday, August 15, 2016

On July 29th I ordered another Blipshift T-shirt, yet another Miata design, another reprint of a shirt I already have, but with a difference. This shirt besides being long sleeve it has an NB image, AKA my kind o’ car on it. This.

Orders were stopped being taken on August 1st and a week later the shirt was on its way. Everything was going along smoothly until the USPS got a hold of in outside of Atlanta. They sent it southeast instead of due east. When it arrived in Valdosta they realized quickly it was in the wrong spot. Here is where it got weird, according their tracking it went to Augusta, then Tallahassee, then back to Augusta in 16 hours. It was in our Aiken mailbox today, so maybe one day late.

Now That’s Embarrassing

Thursday, August 11, 2016

This morning as we backed out of the driveway, I got into the street and when I shifted from reverse to first – I stalled it. Just exactly like the last time I drove when David came over for the swapping test drive thing. I am sure I will probably get used to giving it a little more gas before letting out the clutch because of the lightweight flywheel. Just as sure as I am I will get used to the 1/2″ higher take up point of the clutch. Hopefully sooner than later.

At 6:30 in the AM around here there is hardly anybody awake except for usually one other neighbor going to work in the opposite direction from us and sometimes a person out walking. It was kind of damp and misty morning, but I could easily see a neighbor up ahead coming towards walking his two mouse-sized dogs. So I restarted the engine and while I did, simultaneously started turning the steering wheel to the left to go around him.

This time I gave the car a little more gas and got the clutch engagement just right, so I got a smooth forward motion, but it was accompanied the sounds of a large pack of excited howler monkeys emanating from engine compartment. I pushed in the clutch and coasted by the dog walker with a meek wave and only one or two monkeys saying hello to him as well. About this time, Donna joined in on the screaming too as she was mortified at the noise we were making (me too, just not so loudly.)

I shut the car off and the belts stopped squealing and then Donna did too. I started the car back up and the monkeys were still at it a little, so I slowed down a bit to make a u-turn back to the garage for the belt dressing spray. I pushed in the clutch and the noise stopped, so I slowly let it out and normal quiet had returned to Dunbarton Oaks. I chanced one more start from the stop sign at the end of the block and when the squeal didn’t happen again we kept on going. The car was quiet for the rest of the commmute in.

I Was Right, I Jinxed It

Monday, August 1, 2016

From the previous (Saturday) post:

And at the risk of jinxing something, we are now in the middle of the second round of high detergent Rotella T6 oil and it has been almost 4 weeks since the last check engine light.

Half a mile from home on the way to work this morning, the CEL illuminated. This thing must be set to come on at a certain amount of starts and then a certain amount of time from the triggering start because this is the exact same spot on the trip where it lit up the time before last.

Unlike that time, Donna didn’t tell me to turn around and get the Sonata, she asked, so I kept right on driving. Checked at lunch, it was my old friend P0012, so just reset the light.

Started down, went up, still up.

This Has Now Become Commonplace

Monday, April 25, 2016

The Emperor is spending the night at an auto repair shop.

We got the Miata back on Friday evening and Saturday we drove to Augusta in it. Within the first couple of miles we both knew something just wasn’t right. There was zero rear diff noise, but under heavy throttle the exhaust sounded crazy loud and slightly under powered. Donna mentioned the noise right off and while my butt dyno felt a little power lag, I couldn’t be sure.

We made two trips to Augusta over the weekend and when I kept the throttle levels at neighborhood driving levels the car felt fine. But putting your foot in it, as they say, resulted in increased exhaust volume. A quick search on Miata.net on the issued resulted in several hundred not on point hits.

Monday we drove the Miata to work, but about a half mile from home the Check Engine Light came on. It was running fine and felt fine, but I pulled a U-turn and came home to get in the Sonata.

My first thought was I needed to find out exactly which things they changed at Wayne’s, so I could let the folks know at my new favorite shop know. This turned out to be harder than you would think it would be, but not surprising considering my actual repair experience there.1

At a round cubicle discussion with co-workers discussing my continued Miata woes someone posits that maybe the new shop had to remove some part of the exhaust system to replace the differential and poked a hole in a pipe or cracked a gasket or something. So I called the Automotive Workbench and spoke to Holley and he said that they didn’t have to touch any exhaut components to do the swap, but please bring the car in and we’ll run the code.

After work Donna followed me over to the AW and Holley and I went for a test drive. The first thing he said to me once I buried my foot was, “A lot of people pay good money to get that sound.” I told him, “If I was 20 years-old, I wouldn’t be complaining. But the sound level is almost twice as loud as what it normally is.” When we got back to the shop he took it out back to put it on a lift to check for leaks and run the code.

With Holley’s code reading of Crank Position Sensor Issue, my description of symptoms and some spitballing with Brian the owner we have a possible problem (timing belt off a notch, possibly when Wayne’s installed the new sensor) and a plan of attack for them tomorrow, pull the valve cover to see if that is it and also re-weld around the pre-silencer on the mid-pipe that Steve at Panic had spot welded on a while back.

Started down, went up, still up.

Kindle Fire User Guide?

Sunday, January 10, 2016

Seeing as I’m just now discovering my way around this Kindle Fire thing, I have lots of questions. So when faced with something I don’t anything about I fall back on my training received while member of Uncle Sam’s Yacht Club – RTFM. Trouble is the help files or user’s guide is only available while online. Searching the internet finds no downloadable guide either, so I thought I’d ask for some help from the person who sold me the device.

Initial Question: Would like a PDF of the users guide instead of online only.

Amazon: Hello, my name is Sivasankari. I’m here to help you today.
Hello Brian, can you please elaborate your issue?

Me: The user guide for my Fire (2015 edition) is only available while connected wirelessly. My paperwhite has a PDF that can be read anytime, anywhere.
Amazon: I understand that.
Just to confirm are you referring to this “Brian’s 1st Fire” ?

Me: Yes
Amazon: Thanks for confirmation.
The user guide will be available for your Kindle paperwhite as PDF. But it’ll be inbuild for fire devices. So if your device is not connected to WiFi it’ll not be available.

Me: Why?
Amazon: It is set by the
I’m sorry for the previous response.
The software developer for the fire device set this user guide as inbuild app.

Me: So, it is too much trouble for the software developer to create one?
A PDF I mean.

Amazon: In this case I’ll take this as a feedback from my end. They’ll create user guide as pdf.
It is due to better reading experience, Brian.
I’ll be sure to pass your message on to the technical team in our company.

Amazon: Customer feedback like yours helps us continue to improve the service we provide, and we’re glad you took time to write to us. The Kindle Team will carefully review your suggestions.
Me: Thank you. I understand that after a while the user guide is not used so much.
Me: But as a first time tablet buyer I find myself referring to it often.
And sometimes I am nowhere near any wifi signal.

Amazon: I understand that. You are making some real valid suggestions and I’d certainly love to see them implemented myself.
I appreciate your thoughts, and will be sure to pass your suggestion along.

Me: Thanks. I hope it will happen for some future users.
Bye.

Amazon: Sure, thanks for your patience and understanding.
Is there anything else I can assist you with today?

Me: No.
Amazon: Thank you for contacting Kindle support. We hope to see you again soon!

I know, I know, such a little thing, but it is still kind of chintzy on their part. Yeah, they don’t have to spend the money on creating it or the upkeep when something changes, but I’m betting that is not the primary reason. They want you online where you are more apt to buy something from their store, be it a book, an app, some music or whatever.

Everything Comes In Threes

Sunday, December 13, 2015

Friday before last when we rode the tandem to work I had to add a bit more air to the front tire than the normal touch up after a week or two of inactivity. So this Thursday night I checked to see what the air pressure was and sure enough it was low. So I pulled the tube, found a small leak and patched it. The patched tube became our spare and I put a new tube back in the front tire.

On the way home from work on Friday a couple miles from home we hit a big piece of gravel with the front tire in just the wrong way in that it snapped up, poked through the sidewall and punctured the tube. Hss, hsss, hsssss. No problem, we always carry the stuff needed to fix a flat. Unsnap the front panniers, back the whole front quick release out and remove the wheel. I pull the tube and place the recently patched one back in.

To pump it up we have one of those CO2 cartridge things where you tighten the bottom into the top to puncture the cartridge. Well, I twist it a couple times and then it gets too hard to turn. I back it off and try again. This time I force it so much that I strip the plastic threads. Crap. Fortunately we also carry one of those collapsible 4 section pumps too. After about a 100 strokes I get enough air in the tire to limp home.

Thursday night I dropped Donna off at the home of a co-worker’s house for the ASCO Ladies Christmas party. On the way back home I noticed that the low tire pressure light was on. I figured it was a 3 p.s.i. air loss, just enough to trigger the light, that seems to happen annually around this time of year. Today I broke out my little garage air compressor and started filling tires. Left rear, down 3 p.s.i to 32. Left front down 3 to 32. Right front down 3 to 32. Right rear, down 8 to to 27. Huh? As I go to attache the chuck, right there at eye level, I see a nail sticking out about an inch, right at the radius as the the sidewall transitions to the tread. Right at a place that represents new tire not plug & patch.

sturgeon’s law

"Ninety Percent Of Everything Is Crap"
Derived from a quote by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, who once said, "Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That's because 90% of everything is crud." Oddly, when Sturgeon's Law is cited, the final word is almost invariably changed to 'crap'.
