Damn, I Hate Umbrellas

Wednesday, January 23, 2002

OK, I complained too much about the sun and now it is GONE. Cloudy and misty on the way to work, cloudy at lunch and cloudy and drizzly on the way home. I had to run an errand at 7:00 PM, Weather.com said it was 67 degrees out. Cool, I drop the top and back out of the garage. To quote Frank Barone, “Holy Crap!” The fog was thick as pea soup. Ran the errand slowly and when I got back, left the car in the driveway and snapped some photos.

This morning as I got into the car my wife asked, “Where is the umbrella?” I shrug, go back inside and grab one from the corner. She pops the trunk and I hop down the 2 steps to floor level and as I go to put the bumbershoot into the boot, I mis-judge the distance and place a 3″ long scrape on the back of the car. Yikes! Took the top layer of paint right off! That is the second time I have done that with an umbrella. The first one is not so bad and is really only noticeable if you know where to look. Or the light is just right. This one is pretty obvious, even to the most casual observer. Damn, I hate umbrellas.

Squirmy Rubber

Tuesday, January 22, 2002

Darn, this is getting tiresome, upper 50’s and sunny for the ride home. 🙂 Top down of course.

Managed to hit the traffic just so, so that I could run the one ess turn in town at a pretty good clip. Found out that the sidewalls of the new Bridgestone RE-930 tires are not nearly as stiff as the old RE-71’s, lots of squirm and scrub noise. I’m going to have to practice this maneuver more. Plus I might add a couple more PSI to the tires.

Nice Day

Sunny and lower 60’s for the drive home today. Turned the usual 6 mile commute into 25 miles of a top down, tunes up cruise. 🙂

Wrong Way Brian

Sunday, January 20, 2002

Sunny and lower 50’s today, so when we got home from a bike ride we went for a car drive. The car was firing on all 4 cylinders, unfortunately my brain was only firing on 3. We took a drive to a friends house and I totally spazzed on the turn down their road. No problem, just go a couple of miles further and catch the next right. Only problem is we don’t come in that way often, so I cruise right by their driveway. No problem, just get to the next street and do a U-turn. After the visit we headed home and I had no problem finding the way to my street, but for some reason drove right by my driveway. I think I was keying in on my neighbor’s mailbox, we both have reflective house numbers on our boxes and 780 looks a lot like 778 when you ain’t paying attention.

Miata Pick Up Truck

Saturday, January 19, 2002

A Miata is as good as a pick-up truck as long as it is a sunny day. Spent most of the day trying to get my garage door to work smoother. I’ve bought a new opener, replaced the wheels, cleaned the tracks and tightened the hinges. the only left was to lower the opener. It is pretty far up because there was no stud above the header in the center of the door to bolt the track to. Off to Lowe’s. The rain they predicted last night has yet to arrive and it is a good thing too, because how else would I get an 8′ 2×4 and an 8′ 2×8 home without the top down.

Soliciting

Friday, January 18, 2002

Lower 60’s and partly cloudy today, a far cry from the predicted scattered showers. Top down errand at lunch (put it back up during work, in case) and a short drive before heading home.

The lunch errand was to a used car dealer down the street from where we work. Passed by the other day and noticed an early vintage Miata on the lot. Every time I catch one at a used car lot I drop off a copy of the latest club newsletter and a form letter thing telling the new owner about our Club, the national Club and Miata Net. We haven’t picked up any members from this, but you never know.

Screws Loose

Thursday, January 17, 2002

It is still dark in the morning (sunrise 7:30 am, leave house at 7:00) so we got to watch the blue gages in their full glory on the morning commute. Everything looked AOK. I was worried last night after I shut the car down, I don’t remember the temp gage flopping that far to the left with the key off. I did get a surprise though, when I put the car in reverse to back out of the garage a couple of screws landed at my feet. I had forgot to put the last 2 screws that hold the hood over the gages on. no worries as there were a couple of clips holding it in place, I’ll screw them in tonight when I get home.

Today was cloudy, but warmer than yesterday. So we made a little extra trip out of the ride home. Didn’t have to run an errand, but what the heck, it meant a trip through an old section of town that has nice narrow, windy roads. 🙂

sturgeon’s law

"Ninety Percent Of Everything Is Crap"
Derived from a quote by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, who once said, "Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That's because 90% of everything is crud." Oddly, when Sturgeon's Law is cited, the final word is almost invariably changed to 'crap'.
