Mr. Miata Goes To Mini Tec

Mini Tec Visit

Man, I’m down to blogging once a week anymore, not with a bang but a whimper maybe?

Friday the Emperor got a bath because on Saturday the MMC was going on a day trip. Saturday the Emperor passed through the 163,000 mile barrier somewhere on SC-28 between North Augusta and McCormick.

About a month ago an item popped up in my Google Miata newsfeed about a company that is selling kits to transplant a Honda V6 into the first & second generation Miatas. They were just a hundred miles up the road in the small town of Royston, GA.

Mini Tec has been in business for 13 years hot rodding the original 1959-2000 Mini by stuffing Honda VTEC motors in them and now they have branched out in the Miata. A couple of emails and a phone call later and I arranged a tour of the place for the Masters Miata Club. We had seven cars and a dozen people follow Donna and I to the town that used to be just famous for being the boyhood home of Ty Cobb.

BJ and Norm welcomed us with open arms (and snacks), showed us around their shop and regaled us with tales of daring do. They had a couple of converted cars, an NA and an NB, with their hoods popped up showing those Honda V6 engines. The motor almost looks like it belongs there and as it turn out the the conversion actually is lighter than the stock get up and you end up with about twice as much horsepower.

They offered rides in the NA and only one of our group took them up on it. They zipped off up the road the shop was on and were gone for about 5 minutes. You could hear Dennis hooting a hundred yards down the road on the way back. This looks like big fun, but it would change the whole character of the car in my opinion and is not even on my radar, but if you desire big hp & torque numbers or are a hot rodder at heart, this might your ticket.

Started down, went up, went down, back up, back down, still down.

162,000 Gallons of Water per Half Second

162,000 Gallons of Water per Half Second

Back in October we had a crap ton of rain in South Carolina, roads washed out, small dams broke and places were underwater for weeks. All that water, and because of where it fell, didn’t do a thing to the levels of the Savannah River. But the rain of the last ten days or so has swollen the levels of Clarks Hill Lake to the point where the Army Corp of Engineers have had to literally open the flood gates of Thurmond Dam.

On the local news this evening, they reported that right now they were letting out 162,000 gallons every half second1 and that was actually less than what was flowing into the lake from upstream. Predictably all this water coming over the dam is reeking havoc on the Savannah River downstream in Augusta. It is nothing like what is going on in Missouri, but some of the rich folk along the river are losing boat docks and the Riverwalk in downtown is now the Riverswim.

The Emperor flowed through the 162,000 mile mark somewhere on our trip up to the dam to view the spectacle.

Hank Pym

Scott Lange with the help of about 161,000 ants saves the world free certain destruction by defeating the evil genius scientist Darren Cross in Marvel’s Antman.

Put the most interesting part of the movie for me was the character played by Michael Douglas, Hank Pym. He was wearing what I think might be my next eyeglass frames, the Advocate in clear from Old Focals.

Not too far east of Modoc, SC the Emperor passed through the 161,000 mile mark.

Started up, went down, still down.

Cherahola View

— Saturday —
Well, I got my wish, sort of. It has been raining pretty steady all day. There have been brief moments when it has been misting, not raining and there was a short time around mid-day that it was just cloudy. We decided to use this time to drive the Cherohala Skyway to Telico Plains for lunch. The trip started uneventfully enough and up until about the 3,000 foot level the leaves were still hanging on to their color. Above that, they were pretty much gone. At 4,000 feet the rain started. Lightly at first and then enough that the top had to go up. It was then, about 15 miles into the 50 mile trip, I decided that we should just turn around and eat in Robbinsville. Fortunately, my co-pilot let me have my way.

— Friday —
After an early dinner at The Hub (they close at 5 now because it is “out of season”) we decided that if there was to be a run through The Gap it would have to be this evening. Because it was about 5:30 on a week night we thought there might be some traffic to slow us down, so I said if it did I’d just turn around rather than wait behind a slug. Turns out it worked the other way around. The Emperor passed the 160k mile mark just before the climb up 129 to the beginning of Deals Gap.

A couple miles into the Dragon around a switchback I noticed a 4-door Japanese sedan about 1/4 mile back. A mile later at another switchback he was still there and if I guessed right he was actually gaining on us. Now the rain in the area had stopped about noon, but there were still spots on the road that were wet, so I was not so much trying to slay the dragon as I was just riding on its back trying to hold on. A couple minutes later I heard a swarm of angry hornets closing in fast. Quickly there were 2 sets of HID headlights right on us. I found a spot and pulled over. A matte gray 370Z convertible, top down, roared by with a black Fiat 500 Abarth right on its tail.

We watched them go and got back on the road. During our pause our 4-door chaser made up a lot of ground and by the time I hit the next turn he was coming around the bend behind us. He was now close enough for me to make out that it was a dark blue Accord and he was working it. I played rabbit for a couple miles, losing sight during the the real windy parts, but anytime there was a 50-75 yard stretch of quasi-straight road he’d haul us back a bit. After a couple miles of this Donna said, just pull over and let him by. I thought what the heck, so I found a spot and pulled of. He came around the corner and pulled in behind us with a thumbs up gesture out his sunroof. I leaned back and said, “Go on by.” To which he replied, “No, you go, I’m having a blast trying to keep up.”

For the next couple of miles I was the rabbit to his greyhound until we caught up to a slow moving train of 6 cars which included the Z & 500. It was only a short time later that we got to the dam overlook which most folks consider the end of the dragon. Everyone in front of us pulled into one or the other of the already nearly full parking areas on either side of the road. Our Accord pulled in as well, but I opted to drive the last mile or so down the mountain to the large parking area, which I’ve always considered the official end. That is where we turned around the very first time we drove The Gap, almost 20 years ago at the inaugural Miatas at the Gap in 1997.

When we got back to the dam overlook there was absolutely no one there, so we stopped and took in the view a bit. After a while a few other cars pulled in and we took off back towards Robbinsville. This time through I just drove it and didn’t push at all and was sort of surprised that no one caught me from behind.

— Saturday —
At about 7:30 this evening we both had an attack of Cabin (Hotel Room) Fever, so we looked out the window to see if the rain had stopped. It had, so we got dressed into street clothes and walked the 200 yards to the McDonalds for a hot apple pie. Wow, its been a while since I’ve had one of these. When did they stop deep frying them?

159,000 Platelets

Thursday, October 8, 2015

The Emperor has been back from the Doctor’s Office about a week now and tonight I finally got around to washing off all the dirt and stuff from his 5 nights outside at Panic. I’m hoping that it won’t rain on Saturday so we can do Augusta’s Car & Coffee.

The Miata’s initial diagnosis from the professionals was a leaking exhaust cam seal because of the oil splattering pattern. And of the two cam seals this is the more likely to fail because of the heat factor. They changed exhaust seal and went for a test drive. Unfortunately, turned out that really wasn’t the problem, the crank seal was the big leaker, so they actually did the work twice. But unlike some other shops might have might have, they only charged me labor once.

Yesterday the Emperor eased past the 159,000 mile mark while on my way to get some blood drawn for my doctor’s appointment next week. Lots of top transitions because I missed one the other week, then the day before’s trip up & down and then again today for washing.

158,000 Logging Trucks

Finally Got One

We have now taken photos in 15 different Washington Counties, but if you think about it, with a lot of planning and careful staging, don’t you think you could take 15 different photos around the same county? I’ve always had that thought. So for the last several weeks I hoped to have found a Washington County sign that included the state we were in.

Well, today it happened, and it didn’t matter because in Louisiana the counties are called parishes and as far as I know that is the only state that does that. Not only that we are not even going to use the photo either as we found a better photo op just a few miles further down the road.

On our 400 miles drive today through Mississippi, Louisiana & Alabama we passed or were passed by about 158,000 empty or full logging trucks. Somewhere between Georgetown and Monticello, Mississippi the Emperor passed through the 158,000 mile mark.

Moss Motors Distributors - Swope Automotive, Springfield, MO

One of this year’s category of Challenges is getting 5 Moss Motors Distributors. I combed through the 273 addresses of them in the 20 states we are visiting on the trip to see if we were driving anywhere near them. The big winners were 2 cities in VA and one in MO. We took pictures of all 4 in Virginia and used 3, the other one was just a couple of garage doors and a regular front door with the three digit address.

Because we already had one in the bag from the June trip to Moss Motors, we only needed to get one of the two that were located in Springfield, Missouri. We followed our GPS and it zigged and zagged us through north Springfield’s industrial area before leading us right to the first one. We took the picture just in case for some reason we couldn’t locate number two, the one we really wanted. Swope Automotive is owned by a fellow named Tom Swope who was the 2nd place finisher in last year’s Motoring Challenge. We were kind of hoping he would be open and not off chasing Challenge points like us. We pulled in and the OPEN sign was flashing – cool. The door was locked and the little sign with hours had Closed next to Saturday and Sunday. Oh, well, at least we did get the picture we wanted.

We are spending the night in Bentonville, Arkansas which is the home of Walmart. This means there is a Walmart or Sam’s Club on every street corner in town for a total of 157,000 locations in a place with only 40,000 residents. Sometime just before crossing into Kansas from Missouri the Emperor passed the 157K mile mark.

After a week of averaging 282 miles a day we are taking a break by spending 2 nights here in Bentonville. So we don’t lose our edge, we are treating tomorrow like the cyclists do on a rest day during the Tour de France, we will go for a shorter drive. Probably drive a 100 mile loop and visit Eureka Springs.

sturgeon’s law

"Ninety Percent Of Everything Is Crap"
Derived from a quote by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, who once said, "Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That's because 90% of everything is crud." Oddly, when Sturgeon's Law is cited, the final word is almost invariably changed to 'crap'.
