Hitchcock Woods

The Mother Road?

The Mother Road

Went for a little walk in Hitchcock Woods on Sunday and stumbled on this trail. Most of the other trails in the woods have names derived from the early days of the city’s Winter Colony and equestrian themes, but this one…?…decidedly modern and automotive. The sign is relatively new (first time we’ve noticed it, but then we usually come in a different entrance) judging by its patina.

I don’t know who gets the honor of naming the trails in the woods, but this person has a sense of humor. Both because Hitchcock Woods is a horse riders paradise where no motorized traffic is allowed and this is a short connector trail very unlike its US highway equivalent.

Started down, went up, went down, still down.

Randy's Route

Went for a walk in the woods today and stumbled on this trail. Is it a route taken by Randy? A route created by Randy? Or the way to Randy? Ask him for me if you see him before I do OK?

We went for a picnic lunch in Hitchcock Woods this afternoon. Us and a couple hundred of our furthest friends. Today was the 99th Annual Aiken Horse Show held at a small show ring in the middle of the woods that is used just these three days of the year.

First we went to the Fresh Market for a sandwich of our choice and then we walked next door to Jimmy John’s for a bag of their kettle chips of our choice. This is one of only a couple times a year that cars are allowed into the woods, so naturally we parked at the Clark Road entrance and walked the mile and a half to the ring.

We might have stayed longer, but it was kind of chilly for late March, so we left right after the Costume Division finished riding.

Started up, went down, still down.

Weekend Wrap Up

Show Ring

Saturday, up late, and drove over to Augusta to go see the One Year Anniversary Edition of Cars & Coffee. We arrived just before 8:00 AM and the lot was already crowded. Having never been to one of these, I had this idea that it was one big happy car guy gathering, but in reality it turned out to be a Gathering of the Clans. All the like marquees bunched up to seemingly prevent any intermingling. The row of Mustangs ran 50 cars long from Washington Road to nearly the Pottery Barn store front. Finding no other Miatas to get next to, we parked one row over from the Fords and went into the Sunrise Grill for breakfast. When we came back out about 40 minutes later there was one pickup truck two spaces over, but nobody else was in the same row as us. Donna and I walked one circuit of the lot to look at the cars and then left to go get some Motoring Challenge points.

Sunday, up later than Saturday, and went to breakfast at Ridgecrest Coffee Bar. After, it was home to watch Sunday Morning and finish up the last 4 episodes of Season 3 of House of Cards. This afternoon we got off our lazy butts and went for a walk in Hitchcock Woods. Last time we were there is was in early January. Because it was probably the first really nice Sunday weather-wise this year, the woods were full of walkers, dogs and horseback riders. Our destination was the Horse Show Ring (see picture above) to eat a snack and then headed back out. Because we didn’t have a map, the walk turned out to be longer than first planned, so while never really lost, there were a few times where I wasn’t exactly sure where we were. Not that we complained any, because it was a beautiful day to take a 4 mile walk.

Started up, went down, still down.

Candy Field

Candy Field

Our intent this morning after breakfast, at the same ol’ place, was to walk around the Cross Country Course at USC Aiken, but my circuitous driving route there took us right near the entrance to Hitchcock Woods, so I turned in and parked. Wow, two weeks in a row.

We walked around Pigeon Trap Loop and passed right through Candy Field before traveling near Crawford Fences and down Foxes Den on our way back to Rabbit Valley. As I took the above photo of the trail leading to Candy Field, what I expected to see when we got there flashed through my mind, and it was something much different than the area of small pines with little undergrowth that we found. Click on the above photo to see what my mind perceived.

Doll Lane

Doll Lane

For the first time since early spring Donna and I ventured into Hitchcock Woods. We usually stay out of there in the middle of summer, but this morning it was like upper sixties and foggy, so what the heck.

Tonight I’m watching the FRS play the Yankees and this is getting painful. The Sox scored 3 runs in the bottom of the first inning and then gave up three runs right back in the top of the second.

At least with my other eye I’m watching the Giants play the Bills in the NFL Hall of Fame Game so Fantasy Football is getting closer and I need a little sports fantasy about now.

Winter Walk

Wnter Walk

It started out this morning at 27° and never hit 40 all day and we almost didn’t go back out after breakfast at the usual place, but late this afternoon we got off our duffs and went for a walk in the woods.

After a couple miles of trekking the temperature didn’t seem that cold, so we dropped top for the drive to dinner. Hmmm, not too bad. After dinner though it was good it was only a little over a mile home, because after sitting inside 5 Guys for 30 minutes or so it seemed pretty cold.

Started up, went down, still down.

sturgeon’s law

"Ninety Percent Of Everything Is Crap"
Derived from a quote by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, who once said, "Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That's because 90% of everything is crud." Oddly, when Sturgeon's Law is cited, the final word is almost invariably changed to 'crap'.
