Halfway?
This weekend I’m heading to Klamath Falls to get a Mixed Berry Smoothie Bowl from Brevada and visit with Miata #4, the CTBNL, and its owner David. Since April we have both taken a big road trip in our Miatas and we need to swap some stories of our adventures.
Instead of driving down on Sunday like last time I decided to hunt some post offices and stop “halfway” on Saturday. Tonight I’m in something called Spark by Hilton. I picked it because it was cheap comparatively to the hotels surrounding it, plus I’m a Hilton Honors member so I’ll also collect some points for future stays.
Google Maps will tell you that you can drive the 123 miles to Eugene in 2 hours and 1 minute. That route is all Interstate and we all know how I feel about that, I travelled under or over I-5, but never set rubber on it. The six post offices were on a loop east of Corvavlis that took me only close to the coast (I’m saving all the ones on US-101 for a three or four day trip in September.) My trip to Eugene was 250 miles and it took me 5 hours.
- Philomath – Philomath was named after the Philomath College[7] which was founded in 1867 by the United Brethren Church. The name of the college and city was derived from two Greek words meaning “lover of learning”. (8/23/25)
- Logsden – Post Office number two today where it is inside the country store. The pickup is the proprietor’s and the Prius belongs to a little old lady. I sat at the picnic table and had a Snickers ice cream bar. (8/23/25)
- Blodgett – This the first of two towns so small the post office is locted in the Country Store. (8/23/25)
- Siletz – Only 6 miles inland from the coast this small town of a thousand or so is located next to the Siletz Reservation and is the site of the annual Nesika Illahee Pow Wow in August. (8/23/25)
- Toledo – I parked illegally out front because the parking lot was full. Not for the post off ice though, there was a group of cyclists starting a bike ride and they had parked in the closed Post Ofice’s lot. (8/23/25)
- Eddyville – My second in a week where the post office was not where Google maps said it was. I may go ahead and correct this one too. (8/23/25)
Google Maps will tell you that you can drive the 175 miles to Klamath Falls from Eugene in 2 hours and 58 minutes. Tune in tomorrow to see how far and it takes me to get there. I have one post office slightly south of Eugene and then 3 more out and back on OR-126 that heads east into the cascades, before I can start southeast to get to Klamath Falls.
