Traverse City, MI – Day 53: Double Dipping Ice Cream

The Days Are Just Packed

The title of this Calvin and Hobbes collection almost perfectly represents Keith’s and my morning and early afternoon. We started at the kitchen table and then later moved to the front porch, where we just chilled and discussed politics, philosophy, Navy life, and friends long since lost in the depths of our slowly ossifying synapses.

The Dairy Lodge Cone Girl

Today’s Roadside America photo is just down the street a bit from the House of Huggetts. When Keith gave me a motor tour of the city, our first stop was at The Dairy Lodge for a couple of shakes. While I was there, I snapped a photo of the Dairy Lodge Cone Girl. They also have free small stickers just for the asking, so I asked, and it has been added to the trunk lid of fun. The Cone Girl has blonde hair in the RA photo and in mine as well, but on the sticker the girl had dark hair, hmmm?

When we went out later in the evening to drive a bit north of Traverse City to Suttons Bay for dinner, we passed by The Dairy Lodge from the opposite direction, and what do you know, the cone girl on the other side had dark hair. We got Cheri to drive to dinner because we couldn’t fit three in the Miata or for that matter Keith in any way shape or form. After a mighty fine meal at Boone’s Prime Time Pub, we walked around the very quiet downtown. We made a little detour to the harbor and, weirdly enough, ended up at Dalzell Dairy for ice cream cone.

Yogi Bear

Our first stop on today’s journey was a Bavarian-themed town called Frankenmuth, where out front of Jellystone RV Campgrounds stands a statue of that lovable picnic basket-stealing bear, Yogi.

Ghost Soldiers

This was to be my only Roadside America stop for today, but as I rolled through the small town of Coleman I spotted an interesting Veterans Memorial. So I stopped. Turns out I had seen it on RA the other day, but didn’t realize it was right on my way to Traverse City. It is called Ghost Soldiers. There are sculptures of soldiers from every American war since World War I and the white ones represent the dead.

This afternoon and evening, Keith, his wife Cheri and I spent the time trying to remember what we remember of days of yore. On a personal note I am now in line to get my Radio Paradise Merit Badge because they are the 3rd group I’ve converted to listeners of RP’s Mellow Mix (and accompaniment slideshow).

Lapeer, MI – Day 51: Big Cow Head & Oh Canada

Big Cow Head

My first stop this morning was a quick, 15 minute drive to today’s Roadside America photo spot, a Giant Cow Head just outside Oakfield, NY. Next stop, Canada, and I got to use my new passport for the first time.

Because I would have no cell service in that foreign country, I just went ahead and plotted a course from Niagara Falls, NY, to Port Huron, MI, on Canada’s equivalent of the US Interstates. And saying they’re equivalent is an insult to the Canadian provincial highways; their roads are far superior. I bet I only traveled a dozen kilometers that were rough; the other 300 were buttery smooth. The only trouble was that occasionally I had to do math. 100 KPH is 63 MPH, I knew, but what’s 80 KPH? 110 KPH?

I did have to buy some gas at their version of a Pilot or Flying J. For that math, I waited until I got to tonight’s hotel before I figured out my gas mileage. But I bought a snack and a cup of coffee at the Canadian Dunkin, Tim Hortons. And for the first half of drinking that cup of coffee, I thought, this tastes better than Dunkin. But then, as it cooled, it didn’t seem to taste as good. There is a Tim Hortons across the street from the HIE I’m in tonight, so in the morning I’m going to walk over and try another one.

Bryon, NY – Day 50: Four States & A Castle

Lighthouse Post Office, Eaton, NY 13334

Regular readers know of my obsession with post offices, so when this popped up in my search for a Roadside America photo to take today, I stopped looking.

Free Donut

The castle in Amsterdam didn’t offer breakfast, so I hunted up a local place and hit the jackpot. Cafe Europa. OJ, 2 pieces of French toast, 2 sausage links, and 1/2 order of home fries for $15, including tip. And it was delicious! Stopped at Dunkin on the way back and, SCORE!, I got a free donut too. Because it is National Donut Day it came in a neat little bag.

I started with the top down this morning but got maybe just 15 miles down the road before it started raining and the top went back up. There it stayed for the rest of the day. I did get a walk in around lunch in Geneva. The skies never dumped loads of rain, but it was just enough to preclude putting the top down. Anyway, it was still a pleasant two hundred-something mile drive through upstate New York. My only regret is that I didn’t realize how close I was to Cooperstown. A 20 mile detour would have made it an easy stop at the Baseball Hall of Fame to complement the basketball one of 4 days ago.

The Leather Guy

I woke up at my usual early time, drove up Route 1 for a couple of miles to get a Dunkin’ coffee, and when I got back to the Kittery Inn & Suites, I was once again the first person to get to the Breakfast Room. At the last minute I realized I wanted a state of Maine sticker (preferably a lobster-shaped one) to add to the trunk lid. But that early riser habit bit me in the butt because there were no touristy places about. Next thing I knew, I was in New Hampshire heading west; really, I was in Maine for less than a mile.

I spent the majority of the drive in NH, about 90 miles, because it is wide at the bottom and narrow at the top. While Vermont is the opposite, there were only around 35 miles of that state. Amsterdam is about 40 miles into the state of New York. All those mileage figures are as the crow flies. Today’s mileage was closer to 300 miles with all the twists and turns of the backroads.

Volkstack

I have two Roadside America photos for today, and both of them are from tonight’s town. The first is the top photo, The Leather Guy, who, like most of the tall human statues or muffler men, has led several lives. The other is the Volkstack: Beetle on a Smokestack shown on the right. It has been there since at least 1999, but the auto repair shop it is an advertisement for looks like it had been out of business for a heck of a lot longer than that.

Oh, and I’m spending a night in a place that could be considered a Roadside America attraction; it’s a “castle”.

Kittery, ME – Day 48: The FBI & Waldoboro

Freeport Big Indian

I only took one photo today, and it was of the Freeport Big Indian. It is 40 feet tall and is often called by its initials, FBI, and you can pretty well guess that the F is often substituted for that famous expletive…

I took the photo on way back to Kittery after visiting with my other cousin, Muffy, and her husband, Ralph, in Waldoboro. Muffy and Ralph live in the house that she and my other cousin, Weezie, grew up in. The same house that I spent a week, or maybe two, in one summer when I was probably 10 or 11 visiting their parents, my aunt Virginia and Uncle Eugene. The girl cousins who are 4 & 6 years older than me were out on Monhegan Island working as waitresses or housekeepers at the Island Inn.

When I got back to Kittery, I was treated to a fantastic dinner with cousin Weezie and her husband Lexi at the Ski (water) Club on the third floor of the Bistro 1828 at Pepperrell Cove overlooking the Piscataqua River. Me and the cuz had Fish & Chips while her hubby had the Cod. Afterwards we retreated to their house, where dessert and conversation were had.

Tomorrow I turn left and start home. There is only one more planned stop, Traverse City, Michigan, to visit with an old Navy pal and his wife.

Kittery, ME – Day 47: Nazi Indian & One More ‘Henge

Tuesday, June 3, 2025

Nazi Indian

The day’s Roadside America photo is of an Indian Muffler Man in Shirley, MA. It is not really a “muffler man” as it isn’t the typical shape, and it is made of fiberglass. And it has one hand up in what is probably meant to look like the stereotypical “how” gesture, but looks more like a Nazi salute.

Had I jumped in the car and driven straight from Springfield, MA, to Kittery, ME, it could have taken a mere 2-1/2 hours. But not me, the ‘Avoid Highways’ & ‘Avoid Tolls’ guy; I managed to do it in 6-1/2 hours. I left the hotel at 9 and an hour later stopped at a Dunkin’ for coffee and sat a spell watching the traffic outside. Then I made a wrong turn, which turned into an additional 15 minutes tacked on.

The next snafu was on Google’s head because the voice said, “Turn left,” and it was past the real left it wanted me to take. Another 5 minutes added. Both of these could have been corrected, but I just kept rolling wrong while it figured out how to put me back on the “right” track. There was a lot of road construction that involved a lane closure and a flagman. Somewhere in there was a snack stop, then later a quick bite to eat for lunch.

I was supposed to meet Cousin Weezie at 2:30, but while I was about an hour away having a quick lunch, she texted to say, “Running late; let’s push to 3:30.” As it happened, I was a mere mile away from a Roadside America stop I considered using but dismissed it because of time constraints. Now it was back on the table and I can’t refuse a ‘henge of any kind, so off I went to visit America’s Stonehenge. It is nothing like the real Stonehenge in England, there is no circle of large stones. There are a lot of stones in various configurations that appear to be the remnants of an ancient civilization’s village. There are walls and small rooms, and there is what looks like it could be a sacrificial altar in the center. The flyer I was given mentions that the stone line up with astrological events, but I’m skeptical. It could be they just retconned that stuff and the stones just sort of haphazardly happen to be close.

sturgeon’s law

"Ninety Percent Of Everything Is Crap"
Derived from a quote by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, who once said, "Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That's because 90% of everything is crud." Oddly, when Sturgeon's Law is cited, the final word is almost invariably changed to 'crap'.
