Konquer Kovid in Klamath Kounty Kontest

Friday, December 10, 2021

A couple weeks ago while NFL football on a Sunday I saw a local commercial for something called Conquer Covid in Klamath. I know after places around the country and the world are offering prizes as inducement to get vaccinated against COVID-19, but didn’t realize they were doing it here too. So I signed both Donna and I up to be in the contest.

I have no idea when the contest started and there are weekly drawings for the “smaller” prizes and a Grand Prize of a new Dodge Ram or Durango at the end. We both were vaccinated back in March, so who knows how many weekly drawings we have missed out on. Unless of course the weekly drawing is for just those entered during that week, and in that case, we didn’t win a prize.

I guess there is always a chance on the grand prize or one of the 3 runner up prizes, a hot tub, a Disneyland family vacation and $3k. Of course who knows when the contest ends because, like the start date, there is no mention of it in the rules. If they are waiting until every one in the county gets a shot, they are never going to have to give away the “big” prizes, right now the county is at 55% for one dose and 49% fully vaccinated.

My favorite aspect of this contest is a little link at the bottom of the main page:

I’m not vaccinated and want to enter.

Everything Always Looks Better On The Website

Thursday, December 9, 2021

Last Thursday’s post I showed pictures of the 5 frames from Warby Parker that I chose to try on at home. They showed up on Tuesday and now here are what they looked like on my face. Below are the Warby Parker images of the frames and when you hover over them you can see what they looked like on my face. I don’t know if it the lighting with me sitting in the desk chair with natural window light from the upper left or what, but almost all of the frames looked nothing like what they looked like on the web.

Dawson
Azure Crystal/Oak Barrel
Durand
Striped Pacific
Percey
Tidal Blue
Whalen
Lapis Crystal
Yardley
Blue Marbled Tortoise
Wilder
Squall Blue Fade

The last photo, Wilder in Squall Blue Fade, is a picture of what I’m wearing right now and they are nearly 6 years old. I’m using them because the ones I’ve been wearing for the last four years, a set of Lyle in Beach Glass, broke on Halloween evening.

Right now the leading contender for my next set of glasses is the first one, the Dawson, which has a different color on the front of the frame compared to the earpieces, but I’m now totally sold on them. As soon as this set of frames make it back to Warby I’ll get a second set sent out to me to try four more different frames and the Dawson again.

Eye See You Warby Parker

Thursday, December 2, 2021

After a 2-1/2 year hiatus, we made appointments to get our eyes examined. Today was the day.

We got a recommendation from the nice lady at the bookstore and it was 2 doors down from our dentist, so we ended up at Basin Eyecare Center. Our appointments were an hour and a half apart because that is how long they allot for a comprehensive eye exam. Mine was scheduled first, but when we got there we asked to swap times because Donna takes longer to come down from the dilation procedure. Turns out, both doctors were in the house, so we both got in not too long after each other.

We were in and out in under 2 hours total and that included Donna picking out some frames from a catalog to have them get in for her. Me, I skipped that part of the process because I’m going the Warby Parker route again when it comes to the frames. My initial 5 pairs of Home Try-ons are in the image above. I’ve tried the Percey before, but it was in Crystal and no matter how much I like the idea of clear frames, they just don’t look good on my extremely pale complexion. I have high hopes for the Dawson because I like the idea of different color temple pieces, so we’ll see1.

Cyber Monday Edition of SORT
As of Monday, November 29, 2021 at 9:00 PM pacific time:

Sport Off-Road Touring
1994 Mazda MX-5 Miata 1985 Toyota Pickup 4×4 1967 VW Panel Van
Unlike last week’s Miata, I would own this one. As a matter of fact, I did own one just like it, just with black cloth interior instead of this one’s beige leather. I should have waited a week before picking a Toyota pickup. This one has awesome 80s graphics, a larger cabin and comes with its own motorcycle. No Dodge van this week, so I picked the next best thing, a Volkswagen panel bus, which is just begging for some shag carpet and a bed in the back.

Here is what last week’s cars sold for, or bid to, if the reserve was not met.
Sports: 2003 Mazda MX-5 Miata Sold for $16,000 on 11/26/21
Off-Road: 1981 Toyota Pickup 4×4 Sold for $18,000 on 11/29/21
Touring: 1977 Dodge B200 Sold for $40,000 on 11/29/21

New Mexico Trip Edition

The trip was to help a friend start to set up her new household in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The house is in the quintessential New Mexico adobe style and has 4 bedrooms and 3-1/2 baths with 10′ ceilings. Quite large for a single woman, but this is because she expects visits from several wings of her extended family (of which we are part of), some possibly overlapping.

She had received some of her furniture and kitchen stuff, so we at least had a bed to sleep on, but the rest of the place was, well, very uncluttered. Sally had really only been in the house for the past 2 weeks and she still had boxes everywhere that needed unpacking, Donna helped with that, and I went around and changed out a bunch of non-working light bulbs and a few other small “handyman” type jobs.

We were away from home for 10 days, 7 of them were traveling the roads of 5 of this country’s west and the other 3 were spent in and around 1 city, in 1 of those states. The rental car was ours for a total of 11 days in which we drove 2,819 miles. On the one total day that our Mitsubishi Outlander Sport was not traveling we added 5 miles picking it up, grocery shopped on our return, filling it up, picking up the Mini and returning it.

We bought gas a total of 8 times and purchased 92 gallons for $362 for an average cost of $3.93 per gallon. This is skewed a little lower because we used our Kroger gas points for 2 of the 8 fill ups, with out these points our average cost would have been $4.08 per gallon. The most expensive gas in Utah at $4.599 and the cheapest was in New Mexico at a Native American Pueblo. We averaged 30.5 MPG which is pretty good gas mileage for the size of the Outlander Sport.

We spent 5 nights in a motel, 4 of which were in Holiday Inn Expresses. The lone off-brand night was in Beatty, Nevada, because there are literally only a half dozen motels in town, and that was in a Motel 6. We spent $615 total on motels for an average of $123 a night. The most expensive stay was in Carson City, Nevada. And the least expensive was also in Nevada, the Motel 6 in Beatty.

Sport Off-Road Touring
2003 Mazda MX-5 Miata 1981 Toyota Pickup 4×4 1977 Dodge B200
This is a joke, IMHO this is the worst Miata color ever, I’d really bid on this one. Back when small trucks were actually small and didn’t have names. Proof positive that #vanlife was at its peak long before Instagram or TikTok.

Here is what last week’s cars sold for, or bid to, if the reserve was not met.
Sports: 2010 Mazda RX-8 R3 Sold for $22,500 on 11/19/211
Off-Road: 1984 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Sold for $69,500 on 11/17/21

sturgeon’s law

"Ninety Percent Of Everything Is Crap"
Derived from a quote by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, who once said, "Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That's because 90% of everything is crud." Oddly, when Sturgeon's Law is cited, the final word is almost invariably changed to 'crap'.
