Willard Scott Where Are You?

Friday, July 24, 2015

I’ve said it here a few times, that if Donna’s sister didn’t live in Florida we would probably never visit the state1, but here we are in Stuart anyway, 5 months after Sandy’s memorial service. We’re here to help Sandy’s dear Mother-In-Law Dottie celebrate her 100th birthday.

After breakfast with a friend tomorrow morning were are turning the Sonata north and heading back home, even if it is cooler here in south Florida than it is in Aiken.

100 Candles Burning
Happy 100th Birthday
Dottie feels like a Kardahian

56,000 Raindrops Per Minute

Thursday, July 23, 2015

Destination Brunswick, Georgia and the rain threatened all the way until Statesboro, where we stopped for dinner, before it actually materialized. From there until we made it too the Hampton Inn it rained at a rate of about 56K drops/hour.

Somewhere about 10 miles before it started raining the Purple Whale rode through its fifty six thousandth mile.

Got Any Questions

Tuesday, July 21, 2015

Every month the Director of Operations has a Communications Meeting with each of the two “classes” of employees, Hourly & Salary, to field questions, concerns or suggestions. Each month there is some sort of randomized drawing to select 8 or 10 employees to act as representatives, who then solicit and/or receive questions for asking. This representative affords a slight sense of anonymity to the questioner, in cases of calling out perceived bone-headed decisions by the management team or whining about fellow employees.

This month is my turn as representative. I have gathered a few questions and with the meeting coming up tomorrow I sent out an email to my group this afternoon to remind them if they had anything, please get it to me.

From: Brian
To: Fab Eng Grp
Subj: Only 24 Hours Left to…

…get your questions to me for the Salaried Communications Meeting tomorrow. Got a question that only the Big Kahuna can answer, get it to me.

For total anonymity, snip out the letters to form the words from the ads in today’s paper, then glue them to a pristine piece of copy paper (using latex gloves of course) and place it in my mailbox up front. Or you could always just send me an email from a co-workers desk when they aren’t in their cubicle and have left without locking their screen. An easier option would be to print it in notepad, fold in half and drop it on my desk when no one is looking.

Best option would be to walk up to me and tell me what it is. Don’t worry your personal information is safe with me, unlike all those poor cheating souls who used AshleyMadison.com.

Lesson Learned

Sunday, July 19, 2015

After yesterday’s breakfast with the MMC it was already getting hot, so for the drive home I decided to put our Cool Breeze Scoop in place. The name itself is sort of a misnomer on days like this as the air it scoops and directs into the cabin of the Miata is less than cool, but it does increase air circulation. But when you turn on the air conditioner the incoming air helps move the A/C’d around which does make it slightly cooler inside the cockpit.

When I got home and parked the car in the garage I pulled off the scoop to stow it back in the trunk. That is when I noticed that when I installed the scoop I scraped the heck out of my brand new back vinyl windshield header. I had created several 3 to 4 inch long ragged edge tears in the vinyl. Nice. 🙁 Guess we’ll be giving up the scoop.

So this morning after our breakfast run via bicycle I spent about an hour in the garage removing the damaged vinyl and replacing it. Things always go easier the second time and this was no exception, I bet it took twice as long last Sunday putting just this horizontal piece in place.

When I googled Cool Breeze Scoop this evening to get an image for this post1 I did land on the site of the makers of the product and learned that I may still be able to use the scoop. I bought this thing in 2007 and the original mounting instructions were to insert one end of the mounting rod into the channel of the gasket that seals the windshield header to the front of the convertible top and slide it to the left while pushing down. This eases the rod in place and then you slide it back and forth a bit to seat it and line it up with the velcro tabs (this sliding is what damaged the vinyl.)

The instructions on the site now say lube up the middle 8-10 inches of the channel with Armor-All or similar and spread the channel at the ends of the rod with fingers and then push straight down. I think if I whittle a 1/16″ or so of material off the scoop where it won’t hit the header when inserted…

Started up, went down, still down.

Thirty Dollar Folly

Thursday, July 16, 2015

Several weeks ago I went to raise up my left arm and owwww! I hurt. It worked fine going up and down while parallel to my body, but put it out to the side and it hurt like the dickens.

So I went for about a week thinking I slept wrong on it and it would get better. The next week was spent in denial that I had a hurt arm by convincing myself I could live just fine with partial movement. After all, I’m right handed, I don’t use my left that much. Turns out I do, so I chatted a bit with the Valve Store’s(TM) occupational nurse and she recommended a couple things to try. One was to take a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement. Some studies have shown that they can help with joint pain for those of us who are older than we think. The other was ice applied to the shoulder 3 times a day and taking the recommended dosage of ibuprofen for a week and if that doesn’t work, go see a doctor before it becomes permanent.

On our weekly shopping trip I picked up a bottle of the G&C stuff. What the heck, not only do I have the hurt wing, but the knee that I had arthroscopic surgery on in 2001 is starting to creak. There were 4 different bottles with different quantities at different prices. What with me being a savvy shopper and all, I picked up the bottle with 300 pills in it because it cost less ($30) than the one with 240 ($35.) The dosage says 3 a day, but it doesn’t say when, so I pop 3 at a time with my evening glass of cran-raspberry juice.

It is almost three weeks of swallowing these pills and the knee creaks just as loud as it did before. Now, the shoulder, that’s feeling a lot better, but I’m sure that is because after the week of ice & ibuprofen and no real improvement, I made an appointment with a doctor. This is a whole other post…

Because I invested the money for the pills, I’m going to finish the bottle. I’ll let you know if a miracle happens some time in the next 2-1/2 months.

Started down, went up, back down, up again, still up.

153,000 Tiny Air Bubbles

Sunday, July 12, 2015

Instead of our usual bike ride and breakfast at Ridgecrest, we made a bagel run to Lexington this morning. Certainly not by bike, that’s over a hundred miles, we took the Emperor. On the way back, somewhere west of Red Bank, but not as far as Boiling Springs, let’s call it White Knoll, the Miata exceeded 153,000 miles since manufacture.

The new 4th generation Miata is going to have its A-pillars and windshield header be a gloss black, no matter what color the car is. The designers and/or Mazda marketing have stated the reason for this is to make the car appear visibly lower. That’s their story anyway. They aren’t the first to think of this idea either, the Honda S2000 came from the factory that way. And few folks on the Miata.net Forums have already done it on all three of the previous generations on their own. From the pictures I’ve seen, I don’t know about lower, but it does make the car look slightly different.

So after we got back from Lexington I bought a $20 stripe kit from Advance Auto and spent the rest of the morning into early afternoon carefully trimming and squeegeeing 153,000 tiny air bubbles out of one of the two 12′ stripes to do this to the Emperor. I can definitely see why it would cost a 3 to 4 grand to wrap a car and have it done right. I think this little project came out pretty decent for a first-timer, but hate to try anything more complex. The effect is subtle because of the car’s already dark color. Pictures tomorrow.

If anyone wants the other 12′ stripe it’s yours for the asking.

sturgeon’s law

"Ninety Percent Of Everything Is Crap"
Derived from a quote by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, who once said, "Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That's because 90% of everything is crud." Oddly, when Sturgeon's Law is cited, the final word is almost invariably changed to 'crap'.
