New Garage Door

Wednesday, November 25, 2020

Over on Instagram I posted “after nearly a half century of service it is time to replace the garage door on our house”, but now I’m not so sure. Last year when I blew up the garage door opener and had it replaced, the fellow looked at the old opener and said it appeared to be from 1995, maybe the door was new than too. This would make it only a quarter of a century old.

Either way, it really is time to replace it. It is an old wooden one that has sagged in the middle over the years and now at each end the door does not hit the concrete garage floor, allowing copious amounts of cold air and leaves in. The sagging is so bad that it does all this in spite of the angled shims that cover the 1/3 of each side that had been added somewhere previously in its life.

Today we went down to the local Overhead Door place to pick up some catalogs and look at some sample doors. We have opted for a nice insulated steel door, but the question became, what style and what color.

We both agreed that we would like to keep it as similar as the current style, so that meant the long panel with the long clear windows. But what color, they offer a gray that is close to our present house color, but I was intrigued by maybe trying the brown color which is almost the same shade as the window trim and the gable fascia is painted.

So I came home, snapped a photo of the front of the house and “photoshopped” a new door in both colors. After looking at it, we both think the brown is a more interesting choice. See for your self, below on the left is the original, in the middle the new in brown and on the right the new in gray.

Chrysler quality multiplied by Italian manufacturing equals…yeeck. Only a mother or an Army grunt could love this thing. The perfect vehicle for gathering the family up to go to grandma’s house for an illegal Thanksgiving.

Happy Early Thanksgiving Day

Sunday, November 22, 2020

Yesterday when I posted the photo of newly decorated Christmas tree to Instagram I kiddingly said we might just go ahead and have Thanksgiving dinner today. Well, it turns out I wasn’t kidding.

When we finally found our smaller dream sized 11 pound bird last Friday we didn’t have a room in the freezer for it. We put it in the mini fridge downstairs and cranked the knob to max cold, but by yesterday the bird was pretty much thawed out. This meant waiting until Thursday to cook it might not be that smart of an idea.

Seeing as we had already purchased every thing we needed for T-Day on our previous grocery shopping expedition, we just moved the holiday meal up 4 days.

For this coming Thursday, we’ll snag a couple of slices of pumpkin pie at the downtown market to go with some leftovers.

Christmas Decorating Comes Early

Saturday, November 21, 2020

We have been buying Christmas gifts for the past week or so for the nieces and nephew up in Washington state. We should finish up tomorrow, but they will need to be wrapped before mailing. Trouble is we are unsure of how much, if any, wrapping paper we have. All our Christmas stuff was packed up after the end of the holidays of 2018, then packed into shipping crates in South Carolina in early October 2019, unloaded in Oregon in January 2020, only to be stored away under the stairs unseen.

Well, if we were going to go down and root around in the half dozen or so boxes of Christmas stuff looking for wrapping paper, we might as well drag it all out and start decorating…its close enough. The tree went up yesterday along with all the other seasonal bric-a-brac bits. We also took those multi-colored string lights we bought here last year to decorate the AirBnB and encircled the big picture window in the living room. Today we hung out the small yard flag, the big porch railing flag and wrapped that railing with some candy cane colored rope lights we bought last year at the after Christmas sale at Home Depot.

While we were decking the halls of Casa de K-Falls we were going through of all those boxes of Christmas stuff and weeding out things that we no longer liked or didn’t have a place for and set them aside. Today we donated a couple boxes worth of holiday decorations to Goodwill. Hopefully someone else just might want them.

Merry Christmas Snowflakes

Friday, November 20, 2020

They are going to have to drag my ass out of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue on January 20, 2021 and you better hope they check my luggage on the way out, as I have become quite fond of Remington’s bronze “The Bronco Buster” statue…

Everyday Is Like Sunday

Saturday, November 14, 2020

Ever since I’ve been retired, my grasp on what day it is has been pretty fluid. This was perfectly captured in a Pickles cartoon that I featured here back in April. Today we were reading the paper and listening to Radio Paradise waiting for CBS’s coverage of the Masters to start, when the above song came on and it stuck in my head.

When 10:00AM rolled around and I swapped from the Roku box to cable I thought, hmmm, it is 1:00PM on the east coast, wonder which NFL games will be on, might delay golf it is interesting. A quick scan of the cable guide showed nothing but college football games. Oooh, that’s right it is Saturday.

Didn’t help either that our 4 times a week newspaper, had just last week, changed the Sunday Edition to a Saturday delivered Weekend Edition.

sturgeon’s law

"Ninety Percent Of Everything Is Crap"
Derived from a quote by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, who once said, "Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That's because 90% of everything is crud." Oddly, when Sturgeon's Law is cited, the final word is almost invariably changed to 'crap'.
