Bug Splat

Bug Splat

Saturday, August 28, 2010

The MMC held its 11th Annual Bug Splat Rally tonight. Can we call it that even if we skipped the year? The first one was in 1999 and for some reason there wasn’t one in 2002.

We only had six cars show for the event, maybe the rains in the area scared a few people off. Last year the event ran through a couple of light showers and most if any caught bugs were washed off by the finish. This year we dodged the rain, but we also dodged almost all of the bugs too.

The Biggest Bug Trophy ended up in the hands a new member couple with their 3″ long streak of moth wing dust. The Closest to the Target was awarded to a small speck about a half inch away from Avery Green Dot. Once again Most Bugs and Cleanest Car Awards were given to the cars that showed up for the run in that condition. The only thing that turned out better than last year was our new route that traveled on a couple of twisty road through rural Aiken County.

Started down, still down.

Dead Bugs in the Middle of the Car

Saturday, August 22, 2009

2009 Bug Splat WinnersTonight was the MMC’s Annual Bug Splat Rally. With only five cars in attendance nearly everyone was assured of a prize. From left to right, John Nicholls, Closest to the Dot with his prize of Bullseye BBQ Sauce; Dave Schumacher with the Cleanest Car prize of Bug Stickers to use next year; Donna Bogardus with Bath Time Stickers to wash the Most Bugs off the nose of the Emperor and Denny Smith with the Trophy for Biggest Bug. If you look just to the right of the Big Bug on the Trophy you will see the ghostly apparition of Rudy Wilmoth who was the driver of the only car not to take home a prize. Don’t feel too sorry for Rudy as he and Patti are past winners of the coveted BBT and are just coming off a two year streak of winning the Cleanest Car.

80,000 Nothings

Saturday, August 9, 2008

Tonight was the annual Bug Splat Rally for the MMC. Our slightly early start and the two brief rain showers we ran through on the loop conspired to make bugs scarce. Prize awarding was sketchy at best and as a matter of fact the Cleanest Car and Most Bugs Awards were given out based on pre-rally car conditions.

The rain was obviously my fault as I washed the car this morning to make the Emperor look pretty for tonight’s Club gathering. In mid Bug Splat loop His Highness crossed the Savannah River and crossed the 80K mile mark at about the same time.

Automobile Enabled Insect Extermination

Bug Splat Line UpWe had a great turn out for last night’s MMC Bug Splat Rally. Nine cars and eighteen people. When we all gathered at the Mexican restaurant for the pre-drive meal we exceeded the number we had called in for, so he nice folks there just added another table.

When Donna and I arrived at the eatery we parked in the back row. The one car that was already there backed out of his spot and came over and parked next to me. The four of us went inside to make sure our table was ready. As the rest of the folks showed up, they, in typical Club fashion, parked one after another in the back row creating a long line of Miatas. Unbeknownst to me about halfway down they left one spot open because there was some glass in it.

After eating and before the drive I always go out with my Meguiar’s Quik Detailer and clean off the noses of the cars, so I could tell the new from the old bug splats. Some folks even go so far as to not wash off their cars just to have a little fun with me. Last year’s “winner” pointed out the mark that was still left on the nose of his car that no amount of bug remover or cleaning could completely erase. I started with my car, hey it was right there after I got the Detailer and towel out of the trunk. As I worked my way down the line of cars I came to a green ’99 with a lip spoiler, hmmmm, I don’t recognize this car. By now most everyone was done inside and was out standing around chatting. I finished the green car and moved on to the next and then the next. It was about then that two fellows walked out of the restaurant and wandered over to our group, seems that they had just come out to get some Mexican food. Seeing the line of Miatas with one open spot in the line was too tempting to pass up, so they parked right in the middle. In spite of our best efforts, they wouldn’t join us on the rally, some sort of work conflict, but we did give them an old newsletter as a Club come-on. Plus they did get a cleaner nose out of it.

Even though we had a good amount of people come out, too bad the bugs didn’t cooperate. The Biggest Bug trophy was won by Dave & Bobbie Winkler for a moth with a 3/4″ wingspan. John & Carol Haff were almost the winners, but when we pulled the remnants of a decent sized dragon fly out of the mouth of their car it was too badly dessicated to have been recent. But they did take home a prize for Closest To The Dot with what is a Bug Splat first by having a spot right dead center of their green one inch diameter Avery dot. The Nicholls won for the most bugs, although most of them may have been on there from the beginning because their nose was the dirtiest to begin with. Rudy & Patti had the cleanest nose to begin with and finished the same way, the front of their car marred only by a long narrow string of insect “blood.” Everyone who participated was awarded a prize of their choosing from a selection Mazda/Miata goodies supplied by Mazda.

We then literally took over the Sweet Cow Creamery in downtown Aiken for dessert and post drive storytelling.

Insect Extermination By Miata

Tuesday, August 16, 2005

This Saturday is the 6th Annual Master’s Miata Club Bug Splat Rally. We meet at a local restaurant, drive around for about an hour and then end up at an ice cream place for dessert and awards.

Awards are usually, but not limited to, Biggest Bug, Most Bugs, Fewest Bugs and the fan favorite, Closest to the Dot. I give everyone one of those Avery Dots of about 1/2″ in diameter and tell the drivers to put them any where on the front of their car that they want. The one that splats a bug the closest to that dot wins a prize. One year I gave a tube of Close-up toothpaste as a prize for this one. I have used a bottle of Bullseye BBQ sauce too. Other prizes have been a bottle of Mr. Clean to the Fewest Bugs winner and a lot of Dollar Store plastic insects.

When I started running this rally back in 1999, I needed a cool trophy for the Biggest Bug award. I wanted something like the America’s or Stanley Cups that would go home with the winner, but return every year to be given to the next winner. I asked my golfing cubicle mate if he had any old trophies collecting dust in his attic I could have. He said he had the perfect example for me. Tim supplied me with a 3′ tall trophy. I pulled the brass golfer off the top and stuck on a giant rubber bug. I also replaced the year display on the bottom with a Hot Wheels Miata. Beautiful, something any Miata owner would be proud to display on his mantle for a year.

Here is a picture of the 2001 winners and their prizes:

Splat

Saturday, August 30, 2003

Nice turn out for the Bug Splat. We had 6 Miatas do the route, plus one Chevy S-10 and a Camry. There were three Miatas that didn’t participate. The OTM belonged to a couple of members whose cars are not running right now. Big engine problems for both, both basically self-inflicted. One non-participant was us, the judges, another just literally got back in town from a two week vacation and another that just popped in to say hi. The cleanest car was an easy call, as was the closest to the dot, but biggest and most was a little more difficult. Two cars were pretty covered and the same two also had a couple of large mayflies plastered on their fronts. The big bug winner and recipient of the big trophy was chosen because of the intangibles, his was still twitching on arrival at the finish and trailing behind it was a long streak of bug blood. So the other woman was awarded the most bugs prize.

Oh yeah, I changed the oil and rotated the tires this morning at 120,200 miles. I had the filter so all it cost was the oil.

sturgeon’s law

"Ninety Percent Of Everything Is Crap"
Derived from a quote by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, who once said, "Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That's because 90% of everything is crud." Oddly, when Sturgeon's Law is cited, the final word is almost invariably changed to 'crap'.
