The Year is 1975

Friday, July 19, 2024

While looking around Amazon Prime for something to watch I found this little blast from the past, A Boy and His Dog, in the “Prime, Recently Added Movies” section. This movie came out in late 1975 and it was set post World War IV in the distant future year of 2024.

Donna and I were dating at the time and our go to date night was a movie at the on base theater at NAS Patuxent River, so I’m guessing we saw this together. It was 25¢ each to get in and we took turns, one would pay the admission and the other would buy the popcorn and drink. I certainly remember seeing this and being a sci-fi buff, I probably enjoyed it. The female nudity probably helped in that regard as well. I’m guessing Donna enjoyed it not so much, she has probably totally forgotten it.

The original trailer is totally unhinged:

And the trailer perfectly represents what you’d see if you watched the entire movie which if you are so inclined, is available to watch for free on YouTube. And when I say inclined, I mean under the influence of the brain chemistry altering substance of your choice.

Personally, having watched that trailer and some of the other clips on YouTube, I don’t think I could watch it again even if I did partake in a gummy of the finest Indica cannabis available to me.

Clone Club Redux

Sunday, July 14, 2024

A couple months ago I started rewatching Rumpole of the Bailey and of the 43 episodes total (7 seasons of 6 episodes plus 1 feature length film) of the show I got through a little more than half before needing a break. Not that I’m not still enjoying the episodes, but the show is from the 70’s so it is kind of tough to watch the typical low resolution format of that time period.

Because I have been revisiting some of my favorite older TV shows, I decided that maybe it was time to rewatch what was a nearly 5 year obsession a decade ago, Orphan Black. I was exposed to this sci-fi show like nothing else before it, all because I saw a promo video for it on io9:

The first thing I was surprised by was that I forgot how much we get to see of our protagonist. I guess BBC America was not afraid to go full cable TV as we get to see a rear view of that male cast member too.

I’m only 3 episodes in of Orphan Black of the 50 total (5 seasons of 10 episodes) and if my recollection is right, it gets weirder as the seasons progress, so I just might not make it all the way through all of this show before giving up too.

Jordan Is A Car Guy

Saturday, July 13, 2024

We go through the dive-in line at Chick-Fil-A and when we get our order there are stickers on the both the drink lids and the food bags. The info on those stickers consist of which of the two lanes we are in, the name you gave the order person and a description of the vehicle. This lets the runners know the correct car to bring the food to.

We have been going to get that tasty chicken in numerous forms about once every 3 or 4 weeks since we have been here and every time the Vehicle ID is listed as a White or Silver SUV. Our regular ol’ Cooper, not a Clubman or Countryman, has only two doors and when was the last time an SUV was produced with just two doors?

Today our stickers said Silver Coupe because Jordan must be a car guy and he correctly knew Mini does not equal SUV and 2-doors equals coupe.

That Didn’t Work Out So Well

Saturday, June 29, 2024

I’ve been watching the FRS play baseball for a week now on MLB.TV, so yesterday when I tried to watch all I was offered was the audio. WTF. Turns out the game was on Apple TV+, who has worked out a deal with baseball to broadcast 2 Friday games every week.

Let me go and see if I can get a free trial just so I could watch the game. I already was a subscriber about a year ago, so I thought maybe if I use Donna’s name and a different email I could get one. Wrong, they are smarter than me I was denied. Might have worked had I used a different charge card…

Well, the lure of the game made me plunk down the one penny less than a 10 spot for a month of Apple TV+. My reward was after watching 5 wins in a row on MLB.TV, the Red Sox lost the Friday game 9-2 to the San Diego Padres.

The $9.99 is not a total loss though as now I can watch the third season of Slow Horses.

Just When I Thought I Was Out

Friday, June 21, 2024

They pulled me back in.

Earlier this month my BIL asked me how my Red Sox were doing and I really had no idea. I haven’t paid any attention for the last 3 or 4 years, curiosity peaked, I checked. In the AL East the Yankees were leading the division with the Baltimore Orioles a game back. The Red Sox along with the Rays and Blue Jays were battling for third place a whooping 15 games behind the MFY with all three hovering right around the .500 mark.

I looked ahead and last Saturday the Red Sox were going to be playing the Yankees with the game being Fox’s Saturday Game of the Week. When I tuned in, the game was between the Seattle Mariners and the Texas Rangers. I guess because I’m west of the Mississippi I wouldn’t care about those two northeastern teams. So when an email showed up in my inbox on Sunday about my last chance to get MLB.TV at half price for the rest of the season, I signed up.

I would like to think that the fact that the FRS have won 4 straight was because that I started watching their games, but I know better. I’m sure they will soon settle back into that middling win one, lose one scheme of the first half of the season.

Reacher Again?

Tuesday, June 18, 2024

I got tired of reading books on my phone so I bought a Kindle Paperwhite. It is not my first Paperwhite, I bought one so long ago that Amazon’s order list doesn’t go back far enough for me to tell you when. Donna is currently using that one. I gave it to her once I got a smarty pants phone back in 2017.

Some of the first books I added on the new Kindle were my old favorites, including the Jack Reacher books. I was going to read them series order, but thought maybe I’d try them chronologically. The first four books chronologically all take place while Reacher is still in the Army. Number four (#16 in publication order), The Affair, concerns his last case as a member of the Army. His actions in the book get him on the Involuntary Separation List and he decides if the Army doesn’t want him he doesn’t want the Army.

I was thirty-six years old, a citizen of a country I had barely seen, and there were places to go, and there were things to do. There were cities, and there was countryside. There were mountains, and there were valleys. There were rivers. There were museums, and music, and motels, and clubs, and diners, and bars, and buses. There were battlefields and birthplaces, and legends, and roads. There was company if I wanted it, and there was solitude if I didn’t.

I picked a road at random, and I put one foot on the curb and one in the traffic lane, and I stuck out my thumb.

After The Affair the 5th book chronologically is Killing Floor and is book number one in publication order and the inspiration for season one of Amazon’s series Reacher. I started reading the book and got to page 581 or about 15% through and thought, why don’t I watch the first season again? So I did.

This is actually the 3rd time I’ve watched it, the third time I’ve enjoyed it and the third time I’ve shaken my head at the end when each of the main three people get to kill the person that antagonized them the worst during the series.

Guess I’ll go back and finish the book then keep on reading in chronological order…

Oregon Coast Edition of SORT
As of Monday, June 3, 2024 at 6:00 PM pacific time:

Surf Sand Sun
Rented a condo on the Oregon coast just outside the town of Seaside. The first two days were chilly and rainy but the next two were spectacular.

sturgeon’s law

"Ninety Percent Of Everything Is Crap"
Derived from a quote by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, who once said, "Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That's because 90% of everything is crud." Oddly, when Sturgeon's Law is cited, the final word is almost invariably changed to 'crap'.
