Orthodontic Shyness

Wednesday, October 9, 2002

Do you think it says anything about my feeling towards having Wabbit Teeth on the front of the car that I haven’t taken a single picture of them in the 15 days they have been there? It is too sunny, it is too cloudy, I’ve been too busy, I can’t find just the right background and on and on and on.

Started up, went down, went up, still up.

Big Easy

Friday, September 27, 2002

Instead of Outback, we ended up at the Big Easy Cafe in next parking lot over. Donna & I used to live in New Orleans about a dozen or years ago and this is as close as we can get to the food we loved so back then. Unfortunately every time we eat there the experience gets worse. For what ever reason they have never been able to cook rice right, it comes out all puffed and split. We now know not to get anything with rice, but that severely limits the entrees. Today was the last straw, the first 2 items Donna tried to order that didn’t have and don’t plan on having anymore (they could at least cross them off the menu.) My french fries were cold. And worst of all the fucked up the loaded potato skin appetizer – they covered half with sour cream and the other half with guacamole. Unfortunately the guacamole was kind of watery making it look a lot like baby diarrhea.

Department of Motor Vehicles

Tuesday, September 24, 2002

This is an easy one. It was time for me to renew my driver’s license. The closest DMV place is practically just around the from work. This morning I went over there at around 11:00 AM figuring I would be after the morning rush and before the lunch rush, HA! rush is definitely an oxymoron. The line was about 20 people long. I did an about face and headed towards work.

Then is when I remembered the other office about 20 miles away. I figured instead of wasting time standing in line, I could just as well waste it driving. When I got to the second DMV office it was nearly empty, there were 2 people in line ahead of me! Even being that close, it still took me a 1/2 hour to get my license. Extrapolate that data back to the line at the other office and I might still be there.

Wabbit Teeth

Tuesday, September 24, 2002

The mouth of the car has looked kind of naked since I pulled the Alley Gator teeth off, so last week I ordered a different style set of teeth to put back in there. My wife said she would pay for them if I let her pick the style. Our Wabbit Teeth arrived at work today. When the mail clerk brought the package to me it was so messed up that I thought for sure the teeth would be in pieces. They ship them in one of those triangle shaped express mail tubes from the USPS and it must have gotten wet, letting the weight of other mail bags squish and mangle it, but the teeth are made of sturdy stuff and were just fine. Of course the first thing I did on arrival home is put them on. It is going to take some getting used to this style, right now I think they are a little funny looking. I know what you’re thinking, any kind of teeth on a car look funny! Even if they are supposed to look like alligator teeth.

Windshield Wipers II

Sunday, September 15, 2002

Why is it that when you finally get some new wiper blades, it stops raining? It is Sunday in South Carolina and because of the archaic blue laws you can’t open stores until after 1:30 in the afternoon. So I can’t get any new windshield wipers until we get back home to Aiken and by then the rain had quit. Oh, well, it is supposed to rain on Wednesday, so I’ll get to use them then.

A Drive In The Dark

Saturday, September 7, 2002

Put it up for last Friday’s rainy day and it has been up all week (and in the garage) until tonite. We put it down for a drive in the dark and a quick stop at the store for some breakfast essentials as the fridge is pretty bare before the weekly shopping excursion on Sunday. The Taurus was a nice car for the big trip but once again it is good to be back in a Miata. From last Friday at around 5:00 PM until today at around 5:00 PM we put 2231 miles on the rent-a-car and 120 more on the Civic. Today was another long one too, Lexington, VA back to Aiken, SC, approximately 400 miles. Now all I have to do is find the time to type in my trip notes for the past week, type in the last 8 days worth of rants, and get the photos of the Stone Guards up.

The Taurus Diaries

Friday, September 6, 2002

Lexington Park, MD to Lexington, VA. Today was a beautiful back-road jaunt through the middle of Virginia. Made a stop in Richmond to visit a cousin of Donna’s. We had a couple of hours to kill before we could get together so we visited the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens. Nice place to visit and it was in very good shape considering the drought that central Virginia is in the middle of. After lunch with cousin Suzy & her daughter we finished the day’s journey by heading west on US 60, a very straight road with lots of ups and downs until you hit the Blue Ridge Mountains. Then it winds it way to the top where it crosses the Blue Ridge Parkway and then winds itself right back down into the Lexington area. The Taurus didn’t do to bad on the twisty roads, a set of higher performance tires and I’m sure we could have given some of today’s “sports” cars a good run.

That night I went to my second high school football game ever. The last one was almost 29 years ago while in my senior year of New Britain High School. Some friends and I snuck into the Thanksgiving Day game with our big cross-town rivals, Pulaski High. Tonight I “snuck” into the game between cross-county rivals, Rockbridge County High School and Parry McCluer High School. Stuart is the RCHS Marching Band Drum Major and tonight was his first football game in that capacity. Mom Sally is the president of the Band Booster Club, so she asked us to come along and help out. We followed the tractor pulling the trailer of band equipment down the road into the field to keep stuff from falling off. We just waved at the guy guarding the gate as we walked on by. Later that night I thanked Sally for helping fulfill a life-long dream of being able to get backstage somewhere by just saying, “I’m with the band.”

sturgeon’s law

"Ninety Percent Of Everything Is Crap"
Derived from a quote by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, who once said, "Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That's because 90% of everything is crud." Oddly, when Sturgeon's Law is cited, the final word is almost invariably changed to 'crap'.
