Sturgeon’s Law

Ninety percent of everything is crap.

Derived from a quote by science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon, who once said, “Sure, 90% of science fiction is crud. That’s because 90% of everything is crud.” Oddly, when Sturgeon’s Law is cited, the final word is almost invariably changed to ‘crap’.

Chemo treatment number 3 for Donna was Friday and this one made the last one look like vacation. The last two we were able to leave from the Cancer Center and have a nice lunch, this time it was straight home for chicken & barley soup thoughtfully provided by a friend. More soup for supper too.

The last two chemos caused a lot of stomach pain and low grade nausea that we kept pretty much in check with the 3 different meds we were given prescriptions for. This time, in spite of trying to stay ahead of the nausea with medicine, early Saturday morning Donna was visited by Mr. Upchuck, twice. Mid-morning on we didn’t feel terrific, but everything stayed down. We made a short trip out to the Cancer Center for another Neulasta shot at 11:00AM and managed a slow walk around our 1 mile long block, but other than that the couch was her friend. This morning we had a repeat performance of Saturday morning, but once again the stomach settled for the rest of the day. She even felt good enough to get a cup of ice cream and walk a block of downtown Aiken tonight.

We have a couple of things we would like to blame for being hit so hard this time. Four days prior to this chemo we spent 4 long days on the road to and from Virginia which was tiring. By Thursday she wasn’t feeling good, stomach-wise, already and we went out to eat with the Miata Club to a not so great restaurant. At least we hope this is what caused it, because we can control them and the lead up to #4, and last, chemo will be less eventful and less stressful.

Started down, went up, back down, still down.

Dear Brian, I hope you remember me. The crazy woman form KY that had a million Miata questions, loved The Beatles and has a husband that started off as a draftsman. I have been consumed with elderly parents, and our son just married. I thought I’d take a breather and visit “Mr Miata”. I am so sorry and sadened to hear about your wife Donna (my name as well). My neighbor and friend for 20 plus yrs is going through chemo for breast cancer. The same week she got the call from her Dr she also recieved a call that her husband had liver cancer. It seems to be everywhere I turn. I am not a “religious person” but I am very spiritual and will keep the two of you in my thoughts and prayers.
    I digress:
Taking the Mama mia in for her oil change. I drive the guys at this place nuts because I ask to many questions for a womanl! I always ask to see the air filter which I have secretly marked to make sure they aren’t just pulling any air filter out to show me how dirty it is and how I must change it. I usually bring all my own stuff like air,oil filter and a can of Restore (which I always ask for the empty can back) Steve used to change all this on the Camry’s but with EPA guidlines for disposal and it’s hard for him to get under the car these days,I cringe and take it to a shop. I NEVER thought I’d be taking my car in to a place for somethng like an oil change. I don’t know how many times I did this myself. God help me…I’m turning into the kind of person I swore I’d never be. The kind that depends on someone else to do the dirty work for her.
I have the top down today and figured it will start to pour as soon as I back out the garage. I have REALLY enjoyed this car. I made a BIG boo boo however going and driving the 06.NICE CAR! Steve liked it because it had more leg room but as of now we are going ot be happy with the Mama Mia.
Went to a Beatle fest in Louisville where my boy Patrick lives. It was too cool. Patrick entered a Hard Rock cafe /radio sponsored Beatle talent contest and won with over 30 other entries. He recieved 500 bucks and was suppose to open for one of the Big Beatle tribute bands but keeping in true “Rohrer tradition” it came up an electrical strom and the Big concert was canceled. We still had ton of fun and it was cool to see Patrick in all his glory singing “I’m only sleeping”. I’ll send a few pictures of him in his Shea stadium jacket. They had a vender from Liverpool selling the collarless suits, boots, chesterfield suits and the Shea stadium jackets. I caved and bought him a the Shea jacket for his early BD. Guess that’s about it form here. I will have you and Donna in my thoughts and prayers and pray all goes well for you both. All the VERY best,dj
